Scope and content

Newspaper articles, pamphlets, flyers, and other small publications compiled by Northwest Room staff and organized by subject.

System of arrangement

The Clippings and Reference Files predate 1910 for some subjects. More recently created subject headings are sometimes followed by their starting date such as "Washington Real Estate 1977-" . All subjects are first assigned a geographic subject heading, and then a more specific sub-heading. Generally they include:

PIERCE COUNTY (Mostly government, agriculture, and schools. For most subjects see: TACOMA)
PUGET SOUND (for some subjects see: WASHINGTON)
TACOMA (For most subjects TACOMA includes the City of Tacoma and all of Pierce County)
WASHINGTON

Please note that the Clippings File subject headings underwent a major revision in 1987, and changes are made routinely as needed. Some subject headings have been altered or eliminated, while other subject headings have remained unchanged. Because the articles are fragile, the old headings written on individual articles were not changed. Any given folder may contain articles with headings different from the post-1987 subject heading shown on the folder.
