1935 Daffodil Festival Queen. 23-year-old Margaret Thomas of Sumner was the Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival's second-ever queen. She was the first chosen from a field of ten contestants in 1935; Mrs. Elizabeth Lee Wooten was selected by committee without a contest the previous year. ca. 1938. 1938 Daffodil Festival Queen. 17-year-old Bliss Lundrigan of Puyallup was chosen the 1938 Daffodil Festival Queen. She was accompanied by princesses Bernice Daniel of Tacoma and Agnes Kucemba of Sumner. Miss Lundrigan is shown seated in a chair hidden by a mass of daffodils. A robe of royal purple is fastened at the collar; 1938 was the first year that Royalty wore official robes. A crown of daffodils adorns her dark hair.

The Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. The New Ambassador, Commodore, and Westland were among the pleasure boats, fishing craft, power and sail boats competing in the annual event. Races were held in each classification of vessel. Although the day remained cloudy, it never rained on the crowd of 25,000 spectators. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p. 1).

Row boats maneuver near the Andrew Foss, Henrietta Foss, Theodora Foss, Peter Foss and Foss Tug No. 10 and 15. " Mathilda Foss" placed first in the Tugboat Annie Race, for boats 50 HP or better. (T. On Sunday April 24, 1938 a crowd estimated at 25,000 filled the deck, boat ramp and parking lot at Point Defiance to watch the Water Carnival sponsored by Tacoma's Young Men's Business Club. A handful of young spectators even climbed out onto the roof of the old Point Defiance Pavilion (far right) for a better view. The carnival which featured tug boat and row boat races and a salmon derby was held in part to celebrate the departure of the Tacoma-built "Western Explorer". It was hoped that coverage of the event by photographers, radio broadcasters, and newsreel companies would serve to publicize Tacoma. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p.1).

This was just a fraction of the crowds estimated at 25,000 that attended the Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. A full exterior view of the Russel and Babcock-designed concrete waterfront pavilion shows it packed with crowds of people on all three levels. Spectators were treated to a colorful pageant of marine craft ranging from tugs and fishing boats to the Tacoma Yacht Club fleet. Tug and rowboat races entertained all. The 85-foot fishing vessel, the "Western Explorer" bid a fond farewell as she left Tacoma for her long voyage down the coast and on to Gloucester, Mass., via the Panama Canal. Bob Wilhelmi, a student at Stadium High School, built the helmet. He is holding one of the starfish that he brought up from the bottom of Puget Sound while demonstrating his creation. On July 21, 1938, Cub Scout Thomas Gallagher, from Troop 72, handed an advertising flier for the 12th annual Dash Point Dock Dinner and Dance to Andrew Anderson and his wife as they drove through Northeast Tacoma. The other Cub Scouts were, left to right: Tommy Thompson, Jerry Lerum and Benny Gallagher. The dinner was to be held at the Dash Point Dock on Saturday July 23rd. The program began at 2 pm with contests in swimming, diving and greased pole walking. At 9 pm a dance was held at the Dash Point Community Hall, with music provided by the Walter Rostedt Orchestra. The boys were on the staff of the Crestview Cub Reporter, which was published twice a month by Troop 72. (T.Times 7/21/1938, p. 3).

A woman and two boys put the finishing touches on home-made "soap box derby" cars to advertise the 12th annual Dash Point Dock Dinner. The Saturday event attracted 600 people who watched rowboat races and swimming, diving, log rolling, and greased pole contents. An evening dance followed the Dock Dinner. (T. 1940 Y.M.B.C. Water Carnival at Point Defiance. Four men in Narrows Bridge / McChord Field Jubilee Hats with souvenir hatbands selling "Last Ferry Boat Ride" tickets. The ferry Kalakala would be making its last trip across the Narrows on July 2, 1940. Tickets for nearly 1400 would be available through the Young Men's Business Club membership. Voyagers were asked to dress in costume to compete for prizes; dancing would be provided by Louis Nomellini's orchestra. (T. Times, 7-1-40, p. 5)

1940 Y.M.B.C. Water Carnival at Point Defiance. Racing boats lined up at pier. Many races held during the one-day water carnival sponsored by the Young Men's Business Club including inboard motor, hydro, sailboats. One of the highlights of the June 30, 1940, Young Men's Business Club Water Carnival was a demonstration of trick water skiing. An unidentified man in formal dress, top hat firmly in place, swooshes by on one ski with his cane and other ski held high in the air. Thousands of spectators thronged Point Defiance for the annual event which featured boat races, stunts, funny hats and lots of ice cream. In 1940 the Water Carnival honored the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and McChord Field dedication celebrations. (T.Times, 7-1-40, p. 12-article)
