Florence Patrick became interested in puppets during her time as a student in Montana State University. Ms. Patrick studied with drama teacher, John Mason, who is now one of New York's famous drama critics. Florence's puppets are about 12 inches high, and made of donkey skin pounded thin then painted. John Lee was one of two students from the Pacific Northwest chosen to work with the Byzantine Institute in Turkey for six months. John was working on the restoration of mosaic decorations on the interior walls at the Church of the Sainted Savior in Chora, near old Istanbul. John has just returned from his adventures and was able to bring back quite a collection, which includes six centuries old icons, gold and silver embroideries, antique brass candlesticks, an accordion-like lantern, urns, rugs, goats-hair robe, Meerschaum pipe and many other treasures (T. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. A 317 foot radio tower has been erected on top of the Tacoma Vocational School's building; the tower should be completed within the next week. The school will have a small broadcasting system directly below the tower. Rudy Elsner is the steel superintendent, the prefabricated steel is being supplied by Star Iron and Steel Company. Lester G. Hayes, 32-year-old Army veteran, was given a 100% disability claim from the Veterans Administration as a result of a post encephalitic condition of palsy. However, Lester decided to enroll in the training program of the Veterans Administration in Tacoma where he is learning to master the precise technique of tying trout flies. View of Lester G. Asa E. Troyer's neighbor, R. H. Frogner used a 6% DDT solution and a spray gun to get to this yellow jacket nest, that was on his property at Caledonia Beach. This beehive probably housed 1,000 busy wasps; after he stripped off the outer mud protective wall, a pagoda-like construction is visible, hundreds of cells for eggs, food and shelter can be seen. Dorothy Louise Hopping, daughter of William and Dorothy Hopping, was marrying Alan Roberts; the marriage ceremony and reception were being held at her parent's home. Dorothy is wearing a three-quarter length white silk gown with a v-neckline, she will be carrying an heirloom rosepoint lace handkerchief; her bouquet is made up of red anthurium lilies. William Hopping Sr. was co-owner of William D. Hopping and Company, an insurance company; he was also President of the Tacoma Savings and Loan Association. William and Dorothy Hopping lived in Tacoma's North end, at 3421 North 30th Street (T. Times, 2/6/49, p. 19).

Children gathered at Hoodlum Lake in Franklin Park at So. 12th St. and So. Puget Sound to skate, slide and have fun on the frozen lake as temperatures in Tacoma dropped into the low 20s and high teens in late December 1948. Graybar Electric Company was a wholesale distributing business in Tacoma, they sold appliances to many business throughout Tacoma. Graybar began as a machine shop in Cleveland, Ohio, they eventually just sold appliances, machinery and equipment to other home furnishings businesses. W. C. McKewen was trained as a mechanic and assumed that's what he would do for most of his life. McKewen's life changed during World War II, after he and his Major walked into a booby trap at Bougainville, where he lost his arm. W. C. McKewen was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, he came to Tacoma after he was discharged from the Army, here he met and married his sweetheart. W. C. In December of 1948 W.C. "Mac" McKewen was the coordinator at the new Mueller - Harkins Motor Company dealership at 455 Saint Helens Avenue. From his glass walled control tower, he controlled the work flow on the shop floor. Mr. McKewen was trained as a mechanic and assumed that's what he would do for most of his life. His life changed during World War II, when he and his Major walked into a booby trap at Bougainville, where he lost his arm. Mac was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas.
