The three young ladies in cowboy hats would be participating in the upcoming Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Pro Rodeo, to be held at Lincoln Bowl on July 7th & 8th. Frank Watkins posed for a studio portrait in June of 1979. He is dressed in Western attire including a cowboy hat. Mr. Watkins, a Tacoma Athletic Commission board member, was the chairman of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Pro Rodeo event, held at Lincoln Bowl on July 7th & 8th. This was believed to have been Tacoma's first professional rodeo. Frank Watkins had had previous experience in rodeos as he was a former member of the Phoenix, Arizona Jaycee Rodeo Committee. 1979 Daffodil Parade. Downtown Tacoma Association's entry in the 1979 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade consisted of a gathering of "superheroes," in various costumes. According to Richards Studio notes, they were (not all shown in photograph): Cliff Cook as Superman, Ms. Downtown Tacoma Joan Cook as Lois Lane, Dale Holden as Superwoman, Bruce Meyer as The Flash, Patty Richardson as Wonderwoman, Rohn Burgess as Zorro, Jim Wilhelmi, Jr. as Clark Kent, Chris Salatino as Isis, Skip Warren as Aquaman, Denise Robb as Batwoman, Duane Lindoff as Batman, Connie Buchanan as Jana, Donna Burgess as Catwoman and Jeff Lovely as Robin. Bathroom in model home. "Panorama One" was Crest Builders' entry for the 1979 Tacoma Home Show. This is a view of the luxurious bathroom believed to be part of the master bedroom in the 4,800 square foot home. The bathtub and tiled shower were separated with an abundance of foliage adjoining the tub. A handy portable towel rack was set next to the tub. Ceiling skylights and etched leaded glass accented the large bathroom. The master bath also contained walk-in closets, a linen closet, separate vanities and a Jacuzzi. Thick carpeting covered the floor. "Panorama One" was the largest model home of the three constructed for the Home Show. It was located in the Summerset subdivision overlooking the Narrows in Northwest Tacoma. Photograph ordered by the Homebuilders Association of Greater Tacoma. Model home. This affordable four bedroom rambler, the "Suburbanite," was built by the S.L. Rowland Co. and was featured as one of the three model homes displayed on permanent sites for the 33rd annual Tacoma Home Show. Each year Homebuilders Association of Greater Tacoma members, sponsors of the Home Show, would build two or more model homes in time for the spring Home Show, thus allowing potential home buyers to check out the newest trends in the field. This particular home was nestled among large firs and madronas in Spanaway. The covered, recessed porch welcomed all to the 1,730 square foot, fully insulated home. It was equipped with an electric forced-air heating system, almond colored appliances and an abundance of cabinets. The interiors were spacious and well designed. This young man in stocking feet is poised to make a run in the annual Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament coming up in early February of 1979 at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Well-known boxing coach Joe Clough (seated) poses with Tacoma Athletic Commission member Scotty Weinstone in early January of 1979. The T.A.C. would once again be hosting the annual Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament the following month. Mr. Clough had been associated for many years with the Tacoma Boys Club where he coached Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Seales. He was now coaching the Olympic Boxing Academy of Bremerton. ca. 1978. Northwest Room staff, Tacoma Public Library. Mila Liwanag, Linda Hipp, Roy Ketcheson and Ethel Dobiash (l-r) posed for a group portrait in the renovated Northwest Room located in the old Carnegie Annex (Library) ca. 1978. Mr. Ketcheson and Ms. Hipp had been hired for a federally funded sorting and indexing project of old photographs, glass plates and negatives. Most of these had been taken by two well-known local photographers: Marvin D. Boland and Chapin Bowen. There were about 100,000 items including numerous wide-angle and panorama pictures of old Tacoma and early residents. (TNT 3-07-76 -article)

Exterior view in early 1978 of the American Smelting & Refining Company (ASARCO) with focus on large diameter fiberglas reinforced pipe manufactured by Chemical Pipe & Tank (owned by Barthel Co.) and the Barthel Co. and installed by the National Blower & Sheet Metal Co., fabricators of structural steel and miscellaneous iron. Photograph ordered by the National Blower & Sheet Metal Co. of Tacoma who had probably built and installed the pipes shown above. They were involved in industrial air pollution control, dust collecting and ventilating systems, metal fabrications for industrial requirements as well as building sheet metal work and electric and heli-arc welding.

They are posed before some of the more than 8000 books, pamphlets and government reports on the Pacific Northwest that are housed in the renovated Northwest Room located in the Carnegie Annex (Library). Access to the Northwest Room is through a hallway from the business, science and technology area of the Main Library's first floor. The Carnegie Annex was closed to the public in 1952 when the new Main Library was completed. Only the Fireside Room and auditorium have been used until the Northwest Room was opened. ca. 1978. ASARCO plant. In the center of this early 1978 photograph of the American Smelting & Refining Co. plant located in Ruston is the Herreschoff Roaster baghouse that was brand new that year. It had been installed as part of ASARCO's modernization and served to curb industrial air pollution. The baghouse vented the roaster plant to the left. The arsenic plant is situated on the right. The gondola cars collected "calcine" from the arsenic roasters which was further processed. (Additional information provided by a reader) Photograph ordered by National Blower & Sheet Metal Co.

Portions of Tacoma's skyline in the background include Old City Hall and the Medical Arts Building, soon to become the City's new Municipal Building. Orange Julius. The Richards Studio photographed a number of Orange Julius locations in Western Washington during December of 1978. Pictured above is the Orange Julius located in the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center next to the Osborn & Ulland sporting goods store. As its name indicates, Orange Julius promoted its "freshly squeezed" healthy drink and dedicated a special "speedline" for drinks only. Burgers and other food orders could also be placed. The small eating establishment was brightly decorated in warm colors of orange and yellow. Enlarged pictures of the Tacoma Mall and vicinity adorned the walls. Unidentified restaurant in Des Moines photographed in December of 1978. A customer is placing an order with the restaurant's cashier as others dine peacefully. This is possibly a restaurant called the Pie Pantry where cut pies, ala mode, and whole pies to go could be purchased. Apparently other, more meatier dishes could be obtained as well as the condiments on the surrounding tables attest. Color photograph ordered by S & W Management.

Restaurant in unidentified Mall. This may be a quick dining establishment called "Kitchen Burgers" as pictured in December of 1978. A partial glimpse into the restaurant shows a number of booths adjoining the bumped-out windows and separate tables within.
