The John Dower Lumber Co. float in the 1935 Daffodil Parade. This floral tribute was the first prize winner in Division IV, commercial entries. It displayed a miniature house, all constructed of daffodils, with real glass windows.

The viewing stand for the 1935 Daffodil Parade, a daffodil fountain erected in Broadway Square, at 9th and Broadway. The framework for the fountain was 25 feet square and 25 feet high and was constructed by carpenters on loan from the Fisher Co., Rhodes Department store and the Hotel Winthrop. Into its chicken wire framework were thrust 100,000 daffodil blossoms, giving it a fresh, sunny yellow glow. Over 175,000 blossoms were used to decorate Pacific Avenue and over a million were used on the floats. (filed with Argentum)

The 1935 Daffodil Parade proceeds down 9th in front of the Roxy, now the Pantages. The 25 foot "daffodil fountain," the royal viewing stand, can be seen at the intersection of 9th and Broadway. The Girls' Drum & Bugle Corps of the John R. Thompson Post of the USWV is caught in mid action prancing down the street followed by a floral laden automobile, sponsored by the National Farmers' Union of Puyallup. Up the hill on 9th can be seen the Music Box, Rialto and the First Baptist Church. Crowds, many layers thick, have turned out to view the parade. (TDL 3/24/1935, pg. 1)

The 6th Avenue Business Men's Club entry in the 1935 Daffodil Parade and the winner of the $25 Sweepstakes prize for best float. The float features a flora replica of the Narrows Bridge. Disaster was narrowly averted the night before the parade when decorators ran out of flowers at midnight with the float unfinished. A delegation of volunteers journeyed out to pick 3,000 daffodils by moonlight at the Fox Island fields of Arthur Wright. The float was finished and declared the best of the fifty entered floats. A Sumner-Orting-Fairfax-Tacoma bus festooned with daffodils; the Constanti entry in the 1935 Daffodil Parade. The floats lined up on Jefferson Avenue, preparing for the parade on Broadway and Pacific Ave.

Aerial view of 1952 Daffodil Parade as it proceeds down Pacific Avenue. The 15 mile long parade wound its way down Pacific Ave. from 9th to 19th. A Marine Corps color guard led the parade, followed by the float bearing Queen Eva Beattie and her princesses, royally escorted by the Rosarians of Portland, Oregon. Following the City Light float bearing the Queen were 70 floats and decorated cars, 21 bands, 28 marching units and three mounted groups. (TNT 4-6-1952, pg. 1)

Aerial view of 1952 Daffodil Parade as it proceeds down Pacific Avenue. The day of the parade dawned clear and sunny, prompting 200,000 Tacomans to line the parade route. People stood 10 deep at prime viewing spots, with others watching from windows, awnings, hanging from fire escapes and perching on roofs.

Children pose with their decorated bicycles at the Stadium Bowl, the terminus of the August 5, 1938 bicycle parade sponsored by the Tacoma Times and the Park Recreation Department of the Metropolitan Park District. Some of the more creative entries are a covered wagon and an airplane. The parade started at 2:30p.m. at 8th and Commerce, as hundreds of children wound through downtown streets and on to the Stadium Bowl to the cheering of thousands of proud parents. Prizes were given for the best decorated entries, funniest costumed rider, craziest looking bicycle and oldest bicycle. The top prizes were three 1939 Schwinn "World" bicycles with all the latest accessories- knee-action, motorcycle-type kick stand, rear vision mirrors and fore wheel brakes. (T. Young girls in costumes pose with their decorated bicycles for the judges to decide on the best decorated and funniest at the August 5, 1938 1st Annual Bicycle Race Meet & Parade. The parade of decorated bikes and their riders started downtown and ended at the Stadium Bowl. The days fun was sponsored by the Tacoma Times and the Park Recreation Department of the Metropolitan Park District. The races and parade had over 1500 participants. (T. ca. 1925. A number of men in costumes and makeup suggesting clowns pose on a truck and one or two automobiles that have been decorated as floats. Over it all is suspended a giant straw hat on a pole. The floats are possibly part of the Straw Hat Day celebrations, the day when gentlemen officially put away their winter hats in favor of straw summer hats. The group is posed in front of a billboard. Tacoma Garden Club float in 1940 Daffodil Parade. This float took second place in Division 2, after the Central Labor Council entry. Crowds line the streets of downtown Tacoma to view the Lions Club entry cruise by during the 1957 Daffodil Parade. Children in sailor suits, possibly those of club members, frolic on the bright yellow tug. Even the smokestack and floating device are made of compressed daffodils. 50,000 daffodils were used for "On the Good Ship Lollipop". The Lions Club entry was awarded 3rd place among Service Clubs. Peter Cottontail and pals wave to spectators as the Shop Rite Food Centers prize-winning float continues on its Daffodil Parade route on April 13, 1957. A 7 foot Peter is seated before an enormous yellow daffodil; his assistants, dressed in bunny outfits, are perched in flower shells. Judy Roetker, in flowing evening gown, sits among the field of daffodils. "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" was given the Sweepstakes Parade Award at the 24th annual Daffodil Parade. The float was the biggest allowed under parade rules at 39 feet long, 16 feet wide and 14 feet tall. 60,000 daffodils and 6,000 Esther Reed daisies graced the enormous float. Sponsored by the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co., Dorothy and friends on the "Over the Rainbow" float pass by 9th & Pacific during the 1957 Daffodil Parade. Rain or shine, the parade always brought out thousands of spectators. Those sitting on Morley Studio's upstairs sign and the marquee next door had excellent views. Crowds of 200,000 saw the 24th annual parade proceed through Tacoma, Puyallup and Summer. The 60 foot "Over the Rainbow" float won the inaugural President Award Plaque for the best use of daffodils. Can-can girls strut to the tunes of Dixieland as they march alongside the entry from Steve's Cafe (better known as Steve's Gay '90s) in the 1957 Daffodil Parade. Daffodils cover the front and sides of the genuine San Francisco cable car. Women and children, possibly members of the owners' families, peer out of the slowly moving unit as the band plays on. A genuine cable car from the Municipal Railway of San Francisco was the Steve's Gay '90s entry in the 1957 Daffodil Parade. A Dixieland band on board entertains parade spectators while women and children, dressed in costumes of long ago, peer out of the conveyance. A multitude of daffodils cover the base of the cable car. Keep the Home Fires Burning was the Oil Information Committee of Pierce County's entry in the 1957 Daffodil Parade. A profusion of daffodils decorate this float with the vehicle pulling the float completely covered with flowers. A smaller truck advertising oil heat is also bedecked with blossoms as well as the little girl's house. The small child keeps a firm grip on the lamppost as the parade continues down Pacific Avenue. Entry #49 in the 1957 Daffodil Parade was the charming "Hi Diddle Diddle" float sponsored by the Independent Order of Foresters. A cat fiddles merrily away as a cow attempts to jump over the crescent moon. The dog has his mouth open in a wide smile while the dish extends its arms to an unseen spoon. An out-of-town entry in the 1957 Daffodil Parade was a float sponsored by the Beach Haven Resort on Orcas Island. The large float was decorated in daffodils and green foliage. The Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau's 1957 Daffodil Parade float entitled "Symphony" featured a king-sized violin with a lyre. Margaret Strachan, the 1956 Daffodil queen, graciously waves to the parade watchers as the float passes on Pacific Avenue near 11th St. United Savings Bank and the Perkins Bldg. are in the background. 32,000 daffodils were employed on this float, which won first place in the Retail division. The Queen and her court on the Tacoma City Light float make the turn onto Pacific Avenue to the delight of thousands of spectators viewing the 1957 Daffodil Parade. Escorted by dapper caped men, the Portland Rosarians, Daffodil queen Janice Methven of Lincoln High School and princesses are seated on a slender barge of blossoms, with an enormous eye-catching lyre as the backdrop. The theme of the 24th annual Daffodil Festival was "Melodies in Daffodils". 60,000 King Alfred daffodils decorated the float "Pomp and Circumstance", including a fountain spraying streams of golden flowers. Sporting a very patriotic theme, the U.S. Army Reserve float was one of 47 entries in the 1957 Daffodil Parade. A giant eagle perches majestically aboard the float while Diane Ryan, Fife High School senior and newly elected Queen of the Army Reserve, and her four princesses wave and smile at the crowds thronging Pacific Avenue. As with all entered floats, only blossoms were used as decorations with other natural items, such as woods and foliage. 40,000 daffodils were used on the float which won first place in the Armed Services division. Pauline Martin, 18, was selected on February 28, 1941 to reign over the 1941 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival. Miss Martin, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Martin of Sumner, was born in a log cabin on a Montana ranch 25 miles from Sidney. Her family moved to Sumner when she was two, and she graduated from Sumner High School. The photographers and other Daffodil Queen contestants in this photograph are not identified. (T.
