• Ezra Meeker, Puyallup founder and Oregon Trail advocate, camping with his covered wagon and ox team in front of his mansion. Meeker crossed the Old Oregon Trail twice in the 1900's, marking the trail with monuments commemorating its original pioneers. This photo was taken upon the eve of his first trip. The Meeker Mansion is a 17-room house built in 1890 upon the insistence of Ezra Meeker's wife, Eliza Jane. She had lived with Meeker and raised their family in a small cabin for 26 years, and was ripe for a change. Ezra was not particularly fond of the house, and sold it immediately upon his wife's death in 1909. It is now a museum, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

• View of the soldiers' barracks, officers' housing, and parade grounds of Fort Flagler prior to or during World War I. A small group of soldiers is standing on the steps of a building at left, and gun carriages are lined up on the grounds at right. Fort Flagler- located on Marrowstone Island in Washington State- was built in 1899 as part of a strategic defense system guarding Puget Sound and the shipyards in Bremerton. During both World Wars and the Korean conflict, the fort was used as training grounds for soldiers. Most of the original buildings were torn down in 1936 after succumbing to wood rot. Deactivated in 1953, Fort Flagler was sold to the Washington State Parks Department, and is now maintained as a park and convention center.

• Printed on back: Motor Ferry "Kalakala," world's first streamlined vessel in service between Seattle and Bremerton, Wash. on Puget Sound (Kah-Lock-ah-lah, Chinook for Flying Bird) is the world's first completely Streamlined Motor Ferry. The hull is divided into twenty-five water-tight compartments, making it virtually unsinkable, length over all 276 feet, beam over all 55.8 feet, passenger capacity 2,000, automobile capacity 110, has 5 decks, horsepower main engine 3,000, cruising speed 18 knots. The Kalakala is designed primarily to meet the needs of steadily increasing passenger and automobile traffic on Beautiful Puget Sound.

Printed on back: With light cattle on the Plains in pioneer days, shoeing was not so imperative; but with a heavy team (nearly a ton each) of 1906 the case was different and caused much anxiety and care. Once, on the summit of the Rocky Mountains and above the clouds we had to throw the Dave Ox to get a shoe on him; two shoes to each foot; nailed into the hoof, same as with the horses; shod 17 times during the whole trip.

• A solitary man, possibly from the military, gazes at the surf from beneath an imposing piece of driftwood. La Push is located in the northwest corner of Washington State, on the Olympic Peninsula. This photo was probably taken at Rialto Beach, now part of the Olympic National Park, which is located just north of the mouth of the Quileute River.

• Image of a man and woman sitting atop a plane cruising over the Seattle Civic Center (now the Seattle Center) grounds. The Space Needle, still painted orange from the World's Fair, stands tall in the foreground. The Seattle Center was originally built to be the fairgrounds for the Century 21 Exposition (better known as the Seattle World's Fair) in 1962. The structures were retained afterwards as a cultural and entertainment area that, although heavily remodeled, is still very popular today with tourists and residents.

• View over trees of Washington State's Capitol Campus, situated on a hilltop in Olympia, Washington. In 1854, Olympia became the capitol of Washington Territory. The first capitol building was housed in an already existing structure in downtown Olympia. Now the seat of Washington government is located in this group of buildings constructed between 1912-1928. The domed building is the meeting place for the Washington State Legislature.

There are two beaches and a natatorium, a 3-mile pathway ideal for bicycling, hiking and cross-country running. The lake itself is often the scene of exciting watersport events, and the Aqua Theater provides entertainment such as Aqua Follies and Theatricals.
