About 100 cheerleaders met at the University of Puget Sound on August 6, 1968 for a six-day cheerleading workshop. They are posed in front of the Tudor-styled brick building housing the music department. The junior high and high school pepsters were from throughout Washington and Idaho and stayed in dormitories on campus. Three Bank of California officials lend a helping hand in the remodeling process of their Pacific Avenue building in August of 1968. They are building plywood walls in the main lobby to provide noise and dust protection. Daily operations would continue during the construction period with directory boards listing temporary locations of the various departments. Only one area of the bank at a time would be affected during the extensive interior remodeling. John Graham & Co., architects of the original edifice, would also be in charge of the $600,000 project. Studio portrait of 8-year-old Lin Sue Ames. Blond Lin Sue spreads her arms as she freezes in a roller skating pose on August 2, 1968. She had just won in Portland the Pacific Northwest Regional Challenge Plaque in speed skating for the Juvenile "D" level. Lin Sue skated for the Tacoma's Roller Club. The Truck Tire Sales Clinic was held in Seattle's Sheraton Hotel on July 25, 1968. Seven of the attendees are examining a large Kelly Springfield tire. Jim Patterson, seated, looks approvingly at the others standing nearby. The sales clinic stressed superior service and superior sales techniques. Bank of California exterior, taken on July 25, 1968. Built in the Italian Renaissance style of Wilkerson sandstone and granite by J.E. Bonnell & Son in 1928, the Bank of California's four Ionic columns made for an impressive sight on busy downtown Pacific Avenue. A contemporary touch has been added with the installation of a narrow vertical sign to the building's exterior with the bank's name on it.

Jam session. Seven future rock stars enjoy a jam session at Camp Murray on July 20, 1968. They, and the enthralled audience, were probably part of the free camp sponsored by the Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc. Paul Tanaka, daisy in his lapel, poses with two counselors and two campers at the free summer camp held at Camp Murray during the summer of 1968. Mr. Tanaka was the camp director. Governor Dan Evans permitted the National Guard facility to be used as a free summer camp for thousands of Tacoma-area children in 1968 as part of the city's anti-poverty measures. Star Iron & Steel, general view around shop. On July 18, 1968, Star Iron & Steel was in the process of constructing a 250-ton bridge crane for Kerr Lock & Dam, located in Oklahoma. They had also just landed a 6.4 million dollar contract to build four 100-ton floating cranes for the Navy. Shasta beverage operations. Shasta opened a new bottling plant in Tukwila in 1968. Two forklifts are shown on July 12, 1968, busy lifting and stacking cases of Cragmont soda. Governor's inspection tour of O.D.I. summer camp. Governor Dan Evans (L) is being interviewed on July 9, 1968, as he inspects the free summer camp held at Camp Murray. Governor Evans had announced earlier in the spring that the National Guard facility would be made available for 3000 Tacoma-area youngsters age 7-21 to attend a free summer camp. Next to Governor Evans is believed to be Paul Tanaka, the camp's director. The governor also took time to meet the camp's youngsters and put them at ease by telling them of his small sons' own camping adventures - in the back yard of the governor's mansion using their dad's tent. Early evening exposure of Potlatch Forests, Inc., Lewiston, Idaho plant. Richards Studio had made several trips over the years to Idaho to photograph Potlatch Forests, Inc., pulp and paper operations. The above photograph was taken in July of 1968 for Malcolm McGhie, industrial consultant, New York. Potlatch operations continued even at night as the resulting smoke from stacks can testify. The bright lights of the mill reflect on the nearby water's surface.
