The drug store sits on the corner and has the largest retail space and a large neon sign. The store fronts display some of each business's wares. Fircrest is a separately incorporated community immediately adjacent to Tacoma on the south. It is a mostly residential area.

An unidentified customer receives a facial and manicure at the Fircrest Barber Shop in this photograph from April 1948. The barbershop shared space with the Fircrest Beauty Nook at 405 Berkeley St. They were around the corner from the Fircrest Gift Mart and the Fircrest Pharmacy. This photograph was ordered, along with several others of Fircrest businesses, by the Lakewood Log.

The small market carried a large selection of canned goods on shelving that was wider at the bottom which made it easier to see what was available there. Frozen foods were displayed in a case along the left side wall as well as dairy items in a cold case next to it. A meat counter was housed in the back of the store. Carts for use by customers are seen by the check out stand.

Several interiors and exteriors of stores in Fircrest, Lakewood Log, Charlie Mann. An exterior view of the Fircrest Barber Shop and the Beauty Nook. Near the corner of Berkeley Street and Regents Boulevard, the Beauty Nook and the Fircrest Barber Shop share the same space and are in the same building as the Fircrest Food Market, Gift Mart and pharmacy. The barber can be seen through the glass door giving a man a hair cut. A poster, coat rack and other items can also be seen through windows of the shop. The property adjacent to the building is being cleared but has not yet been improved with a building.

Several groups at Masonic Temple, Ivanhoe Commandry, Lorenzo Mansfield. A group of 20 members of the Knights Templar are wearing their handsome uniforms and plumed hats. The Knight Templar is the 10th degree and the highest rank of the York Rite. The (Masons) Knights Templar was founded in 1816 as a fraternal service organization for Master Masons. The order flourishes in the Unites States, where there were 300,000 members in 1994. Lodges are called Commanderies; states with three or more lodges form Grand Commanderies. Since "none but Christians can be admitted, consequently it cannot be considered strictly as a Masonic body." New Shell Station at 6th and Mason, Shell Oil Co., Mr. Holm. A daytime view of the new service station was taken on April 29, 1948 from street level showing the two garage doors open, banners flying and the two gasoline pumps with "Shell" signs, shaped like shells, on top. At night the Shell signs were lit.

There are two service attendants at the drivers' side windows asking how they can be of service. In these days a fill-up of gasoline included a free window washing, oil check and possibly a check of water in the cooling system.

New Shell Station at 6th and Mason, Shell Oil Co., Mr. Holm. This customer of the new Shell service station is definitely King with at least nine service attendants servicing his car. They are polishing his windshield, cleaning the headlights, cleaning out the back seat and pumping the gas. The attendants wear matching uniforms with dark jackets, light pants and white caps. The most service you would usually receive would be up to two attendants: possibly one to wash the windshield while the other pumped the gasoline.

Grand Opening, Blue Moon Tavern, John Monta. The Blue Moon Tavern, 8402 Pacific Ave., was about to open in May of 1948. Stools line the counter where customers can choose their favorites on the jukebox from the lists at the counter. Behind the counter are storage drawers and shelves, a large cooler and decorations made with fishing gear. Liquor bottles are on display under the back counter. Above the mirrors are neon beer signs for Bohemian Club Beer, Schlitz, and Rainier. A large painting of a mountain and a lake is hung on the back wall. The back counter displays many bouquets sent wishing the owners success with their new establishment.

The "Hit & Winner" ten cent punch board had two boards, red and white, the last punch on red board would allow for this person to punch one white. Treasure Seals ten cent punch board entitled the person who drew seal number twelve to a modern "Porto-Bar Radio," all other seals received a package of cigarettes. The mini bar has an ice bucket, four shot glasses, six cocktail glasses and two decanters, possibly two bottle openers are located on each side. The radio mini bar would allow you to have a party anywhere.

"Three Sure Hits 10, 5 or 3" would entitle the winner to the man's ring, if you had a seal with a number 2, you were entitled to a pack of cigarettes. The board reads "Last Punch on Board Receives All Remaining Seals," punch boards could be found in restaurants, diners, bars and taverns.

On July 19, 1948 the Association of Washington Cities through the cooperation of the Bureau Of Government Research of the University of Washington published "Ordinances Licensing Punch Boards in Washington Cities." This publication listed different cities and their laws regarding the use and sales of punch boards. Two unidentified welders at the Ace Furnace and Steel Company, 3740 South Union Avenue, were busy putting together a large steel tank in May of 1948. Ace Furnace and Steel, founded in the 1930s by A.T. Davies, manufactured many different types of products out of steel including: all steel fabricated service stations, all steel welded furnaces, steel air-conditioned units and all steel transport tank trailers. The company's advertising motto was "If It Can Be Fabricated From Steel, Ace Can Do It Better". The company was sold to Mid-Mountain Contractors, Inc. at the end of 1966. TPL-8257
