  • In 1886, Vancouver B.C.'s first City Council dedicated the 1,000 acre peninsula for park and recreation purposes. On September 27, 1887 Stanley Park was officially opened, establishing the fledgling city's first official "greenspace". The park was named for Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada. circa 1917.

  • The Canadian Pacific Railway added the passenger steamer Princess Adelaide to its coastal fleet in 1910. She was finished throughout in natural woods, having a large dining salon seating 150, as well as grill room and cafe accommodating another 100. Her 118 staterooms all had hot and cold running water, portable heaters, electric reading lamps and plate glass windows. circa 1915.

  • The Petaluma Free Public Library was established in 1878. The Classical Revival building, designed by Brainerd Jones, was built in 1906 for $20,000. $12,500 was granted by Andrew Carnegie and the balance was donated by the Petaluma community. The building remained a library until 1976 when it was renovated and converted into a museum of Petaluma history. circa 1908.

  • Designed to run with the fast Princess Victoria on the Seattle-Victoria Vancouver run, The Princess Charlotte was one of the most elaborately furnished vessels of the time. Certified to carry 1200 passengers, in 1912 she was called into service to carry an excursion party from Victoria to Tacoma. She made the phenomenal run of four hours, 24 minutes between the two ports, beating the record of the Princess Victoria by 12 minutes while carrying a capacity passenger list of 1,478 persons. The Empress Hotel is seen on the far right of the card. circa 1910.
