Ride on muleback of Lt. Jack Murphy and his bride at Fort Lewis on April 12, 1941. Date is probably incorrect as Salt Lake City natives Lt. Jack M. Murphy and his bride wed on February 22, 1941. His fellow officers wanted to help celebrate but due to inclement weather, this unique method of mule riding was not accomplished until March 9th. The bride and groom are pictured above, each strapped and in wicker chairs aboard a patient mule. They were then led on quite a ride to the Officers Club for a reception. (T. The wedding was followed by a reception at the Steilacoom Lake home of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Weller, the bride's aunt and uncle, and the site of this free for all. Doris E. Wharton and Sgt. Milton G. McAtee of Fort Lewis were married on February 1, 1942 in the loft of the YWCA with Dr. J. Renwick McCullough officiating. The bride, daughter of S.G. Wharton, was a graduate of Clover Park High School. Miss Wharton wore an ivory satin gown, princess style with a sweetheart neckline, and a full length train. Her attendants were dressed similarly and carried small bouquets of flowers. The bride later changed into a blue dress, black fur jacket and blue accessories for her wedding trip.
