College of Puget Sound 1947 homecoming football game was being played against the Willamette Bearcats. CPS football coach, Frank Patricks, was hopeful that their losing streak would end with the homecoming game. The Loggers had played against, San Jose and Whitman, and had lost those games. Coach Patricks stated that although they had not won a game yet, they had improved from last season.

Union Ave. The Rockets played their season opener on Tuesday night, Oct. 21st, against the Portland Eagles. The Tacoma Tigers (Tacoma Club of the Western International Baseball League) was sold to the San Diego Club of the Pacific Coast League for $109,000 in October 1947. The sale included the Tacoma Tigers park property in Tacoma, the players, team franchise in the Western International League and all other franchises and privileges of the club. Gretchen Fraser points out her name in the decorations during a Tacoma Athletic Commission reception in honor of her victory at the 1948 Winter Olympics. Husband Don Fraser, a former Olympian, is to her right in this April 5, 1948, photo. Gretchen, the daughter of W.A. and Clara Kunigk, was also welcomed back home as she rode in the weekend's Daffodil Parade. The Tacoma All-stars bowling team took on a Seattle team in April and May of 1945 in the fourth annual inter-city championship tournament. Bowling for Tacoma were: seated (l to r) Ted Tadich and Bill Eggleston, wearing matching bowling shirts, and standing (l to r) are Pvt. Joe Wilman, Johny Radonich and Frank Barker. Pvt. Wilman was a nationally known bowler from Chicago who bowled for Ft. Lewis. Johny Radonich and Frank Barker bowled for Teamsters Local 313. (T. Times, 4/10/45, p. 9).

The women's bowling team from Green's Optometrists and possibly Charles A. Green, Jr., owner of Green's Optometrists. The women wear matching bowling shirts backwards to show their team name and they each hold a bowling ball. They each wear eyeglasses as well as the man holding three bowling pins. They are playing at Broadway Bowling Center.
Donald T. McDonald held the flag for his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Fopp, while she putted in their ball during the "mixed two-ball" foursomes tournament held at Fircrest Golf Course on August 7, 1948. The other couple in their foursome was Betty Carlson and Al H. Moody. Mrs. Fopp, the former Shirley McDonald, was a former club champion. A record 52 mixed doubles teams registered to participate in the big event. (T. Times, 8/11/48, p. 6).
The completion of the new Milton City Hall building was long awaited. The building included a recreational hall area which contained a dance floor, auditorium, stage, kitchen, fireplace and sports facilities. The building dedication in August of 1948 included games, races, children's activities, prizes, free ice cream and a smorgasbord dinner. Skiers from the Seattle Skiquatics Follies entertained the crowd on August 29, 1948 in the waters in front of the Top of the Ocean. The water show was the second annual extravaganza sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Club (TAC). In the center of the photograph is a flat barge in the water, possibly used as a staging area for the show. To the right of the barge is a larger vessel. Between the two is a airborne skier being pulled by the fast boat behind and to the left of the barge.

The Tacoma Open Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission, was a four-day event, held at the Fircrest Golf Club. The tournament attracted a large gallery. Eighteen holes were played each day. A Stag and Doe gathering was held at the Tacoma Athletic Commission headquarters for cocktails, dinner and presentation of prizes at the Top of the Ocean. Tacoma Open Golf Tournament at Fircrest, Tacoma Athletic Commission, Bob Sanders. Dinner party honoring Alexander Baillie at Tacoma Country & Golf Club, Tribune, E. Knight. Alexander Baillie was one of the founders of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club in 1894 and was the club's first president. He is seen in the upper left corner next to Reno Odlin, then president of Puget Sound National Bank, holding a microphone as part of his toastmaster duties. The banquet held in his honor was expected to draw more than 150 guests.

Lincoln High School and Stadium High School were playing their annual Thanksgiving Day football game at Stadium Bowl in 1948. More than 16,000 fans attended the game and cheered on their favorite school. Tacoma's semi-pro Coast Ice Hockey League team, the Tacoma Rockets, were returning from a series of five games, all of which they won. They were the first team in club history to win five straight. The Rockets had an upcoming game against the Vancouver Canucks at the Tacoma State Armory. View of Tacoma Rockets at Union Depot, names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 11/19/48, p. 15). Bob Johnson is the new manager of the Western International League's Tacoma Tigers. Bob is very familiar with the Tigers and Tacoma, he spent most of his childhood in Tacoma. Bob Johnson has been playing baseball for twenty years, he has a lot of experience in the major league competitions, and is known as a right handed power-house. Johnson anticipates a great baseball season for Tacoma (T. Times, 1/3/49, p. 9).
Eight players from the four high schools in the Tacoma High School Hockey League and their coaches posed for a News Tribune photographer in January of 1949. The league, which played at the Tacoma Ice Palace, 3801 So. Union Avenue, was just starting its second season. The players were: (l to r) Bob Jack and Jim Beaty of Lincoln; Gordon Earley and Don Gilbertson of Clover Park; Bob Moore and Carl Peterson of Stadium; and Don McNally and Joe Hamilton of Bellarmine. The coaches (kneeling, l to r)were: Alex Watt, Doug Stevenson, Dick Milford and Ronnie Rowe, all members of the professional Tacoma Rockets team. The first night of action, on January the 13th, paired Stadium and Clover Park at 7 p.m. and Lincoln against Bellarmine at 8:20 p.m.(T.N.T. 1/9/49, p. B-7).
