Wife Marie in chair, flanked by daughter Marianna Catherine and son William (Clemens William III) Van Rooy, daughter Betty Lou and son Buster (Clemens William II) behind chair. Mr. Van Rooy died July 23, 1941 at his home on No. J after an illness. He was an accountant and the head of Van Rooy & Co, public accountants. He retired as a major from the National Guard in 1941.

ca. 1936. Guest room at the new Tacoma Hotel, formerly known as the Tacoma Hotel Annex. The annex opened as the main hotel after the historical main building burned in October of 1935. Photograph shows a typical guest room with a double bed with white bedspread and iron bedframe. A mirror and dresser are on the opposite wall. A desk sits beside the bed and a radiator by the window supplies the heat.

ca. 1936. Fort Nisqually reconstruction at Point Defiance Park. View through gate of Factors House and bastion. The Factors House was built in 1854 for Dr. Tolmie and was one of two surviving structures from the original fort. The original 1830's Hudson's Bay trading post was located in the Nisqually Delta. It was moved from its original site in Dupont to a bluff in Point Defiance Park in the mid 1930's. Funds were provided by the Young Men's Business League, the Chamber of Commerce and several federally subsidized work programs creating needed jobs in the Depression years.

ca. 1936. Bulb grower Karl Koehler, Sr. with a family in the tulip fields of Orting, circa 1936. The flowers are in bloom in the field and a farmhouse stands in the distance. Mr. Koehler first raised hops on his 52-acre land and later turned to dairying. He became involved in the bulb industry when butterfat prices dropped and he was unable to find help to milk his 45 cows. Mr. Koehler came to the Orting area in 1890 and remained there until his death at age 68 in October of 1942. By that time he was renowned for his hundreds of varieties of bulbs, specializing in tulips. National Geographic magazine ran a color photograph of Mr. Koehler standing amidst his multi-colored blooms and other publications, including Colliers and Saturday Evening Post, were active in promoting Mr. Koehler's farm and flowers. ca. 1936. George Lawler, bulb grower, house and gardens. Distant view taken in 1936 of Mr. and Mrs. Lawler standing in front of home. House was a two-story, Colonial-style home. This is most probably the Lawler estate at Gardenville, near Fife, where Mr. Lawler began his bulb business in 1910. It was described as having green shutters, a red roof and a graceful entrance between two columns. It was located near what is now 54th Avenue East and Fourth Street. The house was ringed by Lombardy poplars and the "Gardenville" moniker was in honor of its flowers. The house was believed to still be in the Fife area in 1992, moved about 300 feet north of its original site. (TNT 04/25/1992 D3)
