Troop B demonstrates some trick riding at Camp A. H. Hankins, the 1935 Washington National Guard encampment at Camp Murray. Three soldiers are head and shoulders above the rest on a single horse as they pose one atop another. Troop B is actually designated as the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard and it is the oldest military organization in the state. Tacoma's famous Troop B demonstrates some trick riding at the 1935 Washington National Guard encampment at Camp Murray, Camp A.H. Hankins. A guardsman on a horse jumps over three of his fellow national guard members, posing mischievously under umbrellas. Troop B is actually designated as the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard and it is the oldest military organization in the state. McLean's Lyon Van Lines truck delivering new, crated Magic Chef gas stoves to the Lauan Apartments, a brick apartment building at 818 So. 11th St. The buildings were built by John Buffelen from a design by Lundberg & Ekvall, Architects. The building was built and furnished almost completely of Tacoma-made products. In January of 1936, 64 new gas stoves were delivered and installed, one in each apartment. In January of 1936, two McLean's Lyon Van Lines trucks delivered new, crated Magic Chef gas stoves to the Lauan Apartments, 818 So. 11th St. The brick apartment building had been built in 1925 by John Buffelen. It was constructed and furnished primarily with Tacoma products. The 64 apartments each received a new gas stove in January of 1936. Photograph taken as advertising for Washington Gas & Electric Co. In January of 1936, two McLean's Lyon Van Lines trucks delivered 64 new, crated Magic Chef gas stoves to the Lauan Apartments, 818 So. 11th St. Men were photographed moving the crated stoves. This photograph, with a little editing, was used in an advertisement for the Washington Gas & Electric Co. "Magic Chef" was superimposed on the van where "Lyon" is in the picture. The Tacoma Better Home Exposition held at the Armory March 30- April 6, 1935. Tacoma's first federal housing exposition was designed to show Southwest Washington just what could be done under the federal housing act, which encouraged home modernization and new construction. Over 50 exhibitors from across the country contributed. This particular exhibit was sponsored by Pacific First Federal Savings and Loan Association and the Tacoma Society of Architects. It offers information on home loans- to buy, build or remodel and refinancing. Of special interest is the model home in the glass case built by then 13 year old budding architect Alan Liddle. Alan was the son of Abram and Myrtle Liddle at 821 No. Steele. We have the senior Liddle's occupation listed as real estate, mortgage loans, insurance and rentals. Alan Liddle went on to study architecture and returned to Tacoma to set up his firm. He has won many awards for his original Northwest homes. (TDL 3/31/1935, pg. 1; T.Times 4/1/1935, pg. 8-9)
