But the former tea farmer from the high mountains of Vietnam is quickly learning why so many people call the mail-order catalogs "wishbooks." Like his classmates in 90 similar classes in Washington, Tran's inability to speak English is barring him from finding a job.

Around 40 Iranian students marched nine miles through Tacoma, bringing attention to the revolution occurring inside Iran. They were protesting the Iranian state and the shah. Men at the table are not identified. A Mexican style lunch was served at the Nativity House in downtown Tacoma Wednesday. The rice, beans and meat for large burritos were supplied by Arturo Garcia, owner of Moctezuma restaurant. The meal was the idea of Anna Maria Garcia, a social worker with the Health Department's AIDs Outreach program. She asked Mr. Garcia, (who is no relation) to provide the food. Father Gary Smith, S. J., is director of the Nativity House. His establishment provided the setting. Anna Maria Garcia said that a table with literature used in the fight against AIDS was placed where the guests would have access to the information. She said many of the people she meets in her work are Latinos. The idea was to give them a Latino meal during Christmas week. Note: McDonald's on 6th Avenue provided the orange drinks. Back of Photo: Governor Booth Gardner and Alice Bertner looked at some of the 2700 live birds that have been collected for a cleaning process to save them from the deadly effects of an oil spill that has washed up on the Washington coast. She serves as "Director of Rehabilitation" at the bird hospital that has been set up in the Ocean Shores Convention Center. These are some of the healthiest birds. They are in an outdoor test tank to see if they are clean enough to float. If they pass the test, they are to be released in one of three areas: Nisqually Reach (near Anderson Island); Sequim Bay; or Discovery Bay. 660 birds have been hand-washed since December 24. More than 2500 dead birds have also been collected. The governor said bird-cleaning efforts will probably continue through the rest of the month. The birds in this photo are called "murre."
