The Brown & Haley Company has been making candy in Tacoma since 1913. Although they are internationally known for their Almond Roca, they have always made other brands of candy. Over the years they have sold Mountain Bars, Almond Buttercrisp, and - as this advertising photograph from 1946 shows - Johnny Peanut bars. Johnny Peanut was a peanut covered taffy bar, and a "Winnah".

New Yorker Cafe for Dohrman Hotel Supply.The double grill in the kitchen provides a large cooking area. The large stock pot on the left has a spout with a turn off valve at the bottom of the pot and a water line is provided with a faucet above the pot. The exit flues for the venting hoods over the grills bend towards each other before exiting through the ceiling forming an almost decorative look.
Western Machine Works. The interior of the shop. A metal frame is seen in the foreground. The background is filled with machines and materials. Western Machine Works specialized in veneer and hoisting machinery. They also handled general repair work. Headed by Frank Schmidt, the firm was established in 1922.

West Coast Grocery Company had just moved into their new headquarters in Tacoma. This building included, food storage warehouses, offices and subsidiary companies all on one site. Harold A. Sanford was the President of Sanford-Nash Inc., he had been in the Nash dealership business since 1918. Exterior view of Sanford Nash Company, two signs posted by entrance tell us this is the Parts Department for used cars, the Service Department is located on lower floor. Stucco building at Sixth and Tacoma Avenue, two Nash automobiles in showroom windows, neon and painted signs on building.
Ray Gamble banquet at Rau's Chicken Dinner Inn located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and John's Orchard Hill (the Mountain Highway). Ray Gamble was born in Lexington, Nebraska, and arrived in Tacoma in a boxcar in 1892. His was a rags-to-riches story. He started in business opening a fish market in 1913 and developed the world's largest wood flour business which furnished stabilizing materials for the explosives manufacturers. He owned several pieces of real estate including the exclusive Casa Blanca Apartments. He was also well known for his hobbies of collecting elephant statues and performing magic. Rau's Club was opened March 2, 1939. In August 1946 the name was changed to the "Country House Restaurant". (TNT 7/27/1941, p. A2; Genii, March, 1939)

Robert Sconce Advertising, Ray Ridge Motors. In this October 11, 1946, photograph, Ray Ridge, just to the right of the engine, is holding a part while the other men look on and listen to an explanation about the part. Ray Ridge was the newly appointed Lincoln and Mercury dealer for the area. These men are shown in the service department of Ray Ridge Motors at 124 Tacoma Avenue South.

Boat show at Hotel Winthrop, Hotel Winthrop, Mr. Boyd. A boat show, sponsored by the Tacoma Yacht Club, was held in the lobby of the Hotel Winthrop August 17 - 22, 1948. Mayor C. Val Fawcett is seen to the right of the helm with several other men at the boat show. (T.Times, 8/9/1948, p.2)

Associated Oil Service Stations. Eldred J. Omundson and Paul L. Crosby operated the Associated station at 3102 South 12th Street. The station features the "Flying A" neon sign over its distinctive concentric rings on top of the station. The station featured Aero batteries and Federal tires. A sign affixed to a light pole in the parking area reminds customers of the Community Chest drive. The lot is fenced and two automobiles are parked near the station. TPL-1886

They are working from scaffolding and they have their building materials stacked on a second set of scaffolding behind them. A wheelbarrow has been used to mix cement below the work area and piles of cement sit on boards near the workers ready to lay another row of cement clocks.
Building front, Mondau's Tug Boat Tavern, Louie Mondau. Located in one of the brick buildings along Pacific Avenue, this view of Mondau's Tug Boat Restaurant and Tavern shows the entrance to the restaurant and on the left, the entrance to the James Hotel, above. Neon signs outline the letters and the tug boat that are part of the restaurant's sign, connected to their marquee. Louie Mondau was the owner of the restaurant and tavern. Warwick's Saloon had been at this location from 1893 until 1916.
Telephone Company Garage, Pacific T&T, Mr. A. Hill. Shelves contain some of the equipment needed to install new telephones and a bin sits next to a workbench labled for empty telephone set cartons. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph advertised that they had been putting in telephones almost three times as fast as ever before in the west and was serving an all time high number of phones. Exterior of new building at Center and Lawrence, Titus Manufacturing Company, Mr. Leon Titus. When demand for rebuilt engines increased in July 1946, Titus Motor Company restructured their engine rebuilding department which became Titus Manufacturing Company. They had continued at 624 Broadway until 1949 but now have moved into their new facilities at Center and Lawrence Streets in Nalley Valley. A large Ford truck is parked in front of the loading dock.

Several views of new floor furnace, Heatlox Furnaces, Inc. Harry V. Smith served as president of Heatlox Furnaces, D.H. Powers was vice-president and E.J. Watson was Chairman of the Board in 1949. A view inside the plant shows a row of the new design of furnace manufactured by the company. The company manufactured several types of heating systems and offered "Minneapolis-Honeywell" controls.

Mueller-Harkins showroom, ordered by Bonnell Construction Co. An exterior view of the very modern automobile showroom built by Mueller-Harkins showing the two circular display windows that each contained a revolving stage for the newest models of Buick automobiles. The large, monolithic tower displaying the name "Buick" in neon on top has recently been completed. The sign for the Walker Apartment Hotel can be seen on the far left, across Saint Helens Avenue.

Interior of new store at 1112 Pacific Avenue, Zingler Electric Company, Mr. Hans L. Zingler. Zingler's retained their earlier location at 767-69 South 38th Street when they opened their new store at 1112 Pacific Avenue. The company advertised a sale at the end of June 1949 where you could buy an electric range for $229.50. The company sold sewing machines with parts and repair a specialty, refrigerators, ranges, freezers, washers, and vacuum cleaners. (TNT, 6/24/1949, p.10)
Engines are taken from Ford cars and trucks, then replaced with a rebuilt engine by the Titus plant, payment is made with the trade in of the old engine and cash. Testing includes the engine being spun at over 800 r.p.m. while its operation, sound and oil pressure are carefully monitored. This service is available to individual owners, garages and Ford dealers.
