Nine members of the Shipmates modeled a variety of bathing suits for the annual Shipmates' Tea and Style Show held in April of 1946 at the Tacoma Yacht Club. For the style show, the Rhodes Sports Shop provided a selection of outdoor clothes suitable for sailing Puget Sound and Canadian waters. The bathing suit models are standing in front of the "Santa Rosa" owned by Jewell and Edna Lerum; Edna was a club member. Tacoma Yacht Club member Eva Seymour has been tentatively identified as posing fourth from the right. She and husband August Seymour were owners of the "April Ann" which was moored at the Club. (T. Although no further information is available on this picture, it is most probably from the Gold and Green Ball, the winter social event of the church. The dance is sponsored by the Mutual Improvement Association of the Church. The event is named for the colors of the Mutual Improvement Association and it is staged in all stakes and missions of the church.

Minchau-Skupen wedding. Erna Minchau and John B. Skupen were married July 4, 1949, at Allen Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Skupen stand happily together outside the church. Mrs. Skupen has worn a dress with a ruffle at the hem that gathers in the back into a flowing drape of fabric. She is wearing a fur stole and a hat that matches her dress. The Olympia Centennial Queen Royal and her court, dressed in pioneer garb, appear in the 1950 Daffodil Parade to advertise their upcoming celebration May 1-7th. In the background spectators view the parade from the front of Union Station. The two hour parade was led by the U.S. Marine color guard, followed by the Governor's car, with the cars bearing the mayors and officials of the sponsoring cities of Tacoma, Puyallup and Sumner immediately behind.

Daffodil court members smile in the early morning gloom aboard the Tacoma Kiwanis float as they line up for the parade. The Kiwanis' floral tribute to spring topped by a beautiful butterfly took second place in service club entrants in the 1950 parade. The parade was a grueling all day affair for marchers and float riders, beginning with the line up in the morning and the two hour parade through Tacoma, after which parade performers reassembled at noon in Puyallup for the march to Sumner.

This float sponsored by the city of Bonney Lake celebrates the Boys Club. It is topped by two youngsters, one in a football uniform and one in skiing garb. The Bonney Lake float is making the turn from Broadway to 9th, followed by the Associated Contractors sweepstakes winning windmill float and a marching band. The cold weather in 1950 delayed the opening of many of the daffodil blooms, cutting the amount available for the parade in half.

This "small fry" float representing the little old lady who lived in a shoe nursery rhyme passes down Pacific Ave. in the 1950 Daffodil Parade. The little old lady and her many children ride on the float. The Daffodil Parades had no theme until after 1951. The parade operated on a very small budget of about $5,000 financed through the sale of 50 cent daffodil buttons and contributions. Daffodil growers, although not the parade's biggest supporters, ended up being the biggest contributors, delivering approximately 1,000,000 flowers to the parade at a price well below market price.

The 1950 Daffodil parade heralded the arrival of Spring and the coming of the Easter holidays, as evidenced by the bunny float entered by the Orting Lions Club. This float was 3rd place winner in class 2 service club entrants.The driver's head can be seen out the side of the bunny. Parade floats had to cut their demand for daffodils by one half when cold weather stopped many of the yellow blossoms from opening in time for the parade.

This flower bedecked tribute to the new Narrows Bridge, which was under construction, was the 3rd place commercial entry award winning float, sponsored by Rhodes Brothers department store. The float boasted that now even "more roads will lead to Rhodes." The float had miniature cars crossing the span over a floral Puget Sound. Rhodes was Tacoma's largest department store and was located in downtown Tacoma on Broadway.

First place winner of the 1950 Daffodil parade class 2 service club entrants was this float by the Young Mens Business Club. Daffodil court members rode atop this sweetheart float decorated with daffodils and tulips. The 1950 parade was the largest ever with 125 units- 70 floats, 18 bands, and 26 marching organizations plus comic groups, mounted drill teams, and decorated automobiles.

Jane Shadley and Carl Russell Herness were married June 24, 1950, at Lincoln Park Christian Church. The Reverend Donald Cox performed the double-ring ceremony and the bride was given in marriage by Roy A. Cornwell. The bride wore an ankle-length gown of imported egg-shell Irish linen lace, fashioned with a yoke of net ornamented with lace. Her pink shoulder-length veil was caught with orange blossoms to a satin-trimmed lace cap. She wore a single strand of pearls, a gift of the bridegroom, and carried orchids and stephanotis. Two units of segregated U.S. Army troops. An African American unit is followed by a white unit in the Armed Forces Parade on May 20, 1950. This was the first Armed Forces Day parade. It was a combination of the U.S. Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force. It was estimated that 6,000 persons participated in the parade. Over 2,500 infantrymen of the 9th regimental combat team of the Second division and other units from Fort Lewis passed in review. Reserve units also played an important part in the event including the National Guard, Marine Corps, Naval Reserve, Army Reserve and Bellarmine R.O.T.C. (TNT, 5/22/1950, p.1)

Shirley Lucille Llewellyn and Vaeth Hewitt were married July 14, 1950, at Mason Methodist Church. The bride and her attendants pose together at the church altar. The pointed bodice was enhanced by a lace peplum and lace cascading down the back panel of the full skirt extended to a court length train. She wore a floor-length mantilla of French lace. Tacoma Vocational School presented diplomas to 123 graduates from apprenticeship into the journeymen classification in 1950. The graduates were in 21 crafts. Each man had completed related instruction through facilities of Tacoma Vocational-Technical School as well as the required number of hours of on-the-job training. 1950 graduation class from Tacoma Vocational School. Tacoma's Vocational-Technical school held an open house that was highlighted by the graduation exercises. The facilities of the school including the distributive education class, the radio broadcast studio for KTOY, the restaurant trades department and the business education department. Santa Claus attended the Christmas party for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company women employees in 1950. The 28 women and their male supervisor gather around a Christmas tree in the company's lounge. Each of the women wears a corsage. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph provided an employee benefit plan that provided continuing paychecks during illness after being with the company two years and a pension plan. Wedding portrait of Violet Anderson, Anderson-Thompson wedding party, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Miss Anderson, daughter of the Carl Sixtus Andersons, became the wife of John Darrell Thompson, son of the John William Thompsons, on May 12, 1951 in a double ring ceremony. The bride wore a gown of Chantilly lace with tiers of flower-edged ruffles. The bodice was lace appliqued over satin and the costume was accented by elbow length lace gloves. The veil was waist length illusion attached to a pearl trimmed lace bonnet. The bouquet was of baby gardenias and lilly of the valley. The bridesmaids wore pale green gowns of net over taffeta and carried bouquets of purple and yellow. The reception was held in the church parlor and utilized the same lavender and yellow color scheme as the wedding. Mrs. Thompson attended Lincoln High School and the University of Washington. The groom graduated from Stadium and attended Willamette University and received his degree from the University of Washington.The couple made their first home in Olympia. (TNT 5/13/1951, pg.
