White Shield Home, Community Chest, Bob Lynd. The large home is separated from the road by a slope and many trees. A stairway leads from the sidewalk to the facility. The roof has many dormers and an open area with a flagpole. The Richards' photographer's Woody is parked on the street. The White Shield Home was dedicated in August of 1916 in ceremonies attended by Governor Ernest Lister. It helped young women and girls in need, a service it would provide until 1956. This photograph was taken as part of a series for the Community Chest, likely as promotional tools for its annual fund raising.

Alexander S. Melovidoff was the founder and president of the Tacoma Conservatory of Music. For many years he conducted a summer band concert series at Point Defiance Park. This picture shows Mr. Melovidoff and his All-Tacoma Band as they appeared in 1947. Their first concert in the park that year was on June 29th. They played 15 numbers. (T.Times, 6/26/1947, p.13)

In this photograph from May, 1947, Anton (Tony) Barcott holds the fish he and Wahenell Barcott caught in Lake St. Claire, Thurston County. It is a 30 pound carp. The fish was on display in the Washington Hardware Co. sports department. Although Tony was the manager of the California Oyster House at 930 Pacific Ave., he assured the world he will not cook and serve this amazing carp. Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad. The Olympian Hiawatha was built by the Milwaukee Road for the Pacific Northwest. She was a diesel-electric locomotive that would run between Tacoma and Chicago. She would make the run between the two cities in 45 hours, 14 hours less than previously. All cars were air conditioned and she was outfitted with a public address system. (T.Times, 6/25/1947, p.11)

Ladd Logging Company. Several very large logs float in a log pond. In October 1948 Ladd Logging Company was known to have been cutting logs from the Kosmos section of east Lewis County along with other logging companies. The logs were brought to Tacoma's harbor dumps and storage spaces by rail. When needed they were rafted together and taken to saw or pulp mills. Large numbers of logs were cut and dumped in log ponds against the approaching winter slowdown in the woods. (T.Times, 2/26/1941; Ledger 11/10/1946)

A curly haired young boy, wearing a stripped shirt, overalls and a hat, poses with a rather impressive looking bulldog. The boy and his dog were entrants in the Pet Parade held in the Lincoln business district on Saturday July 26, 1947. A large crowd stands behind the boy and his dog in front of Hogan's Fine Foods Store at the corner of So. 38th and Yakima. One can only wonder why he is holding a pipe in his right hand. TPL-1772

Exterior of Wheeler Osgood Company's offices. Wheeler-Osgood was known as the world's largest manufacturer of doors and plywood at this time. The company started making doors in Tacoma in 1889 and plywood in 1910, only five years after the first fir plywood was manufactured at Portland, Oregon. N.O. Cruver served as president of the company at this time. He was president for 32 years.

Kitchen service at Benbow Lakes Resort. Six members of the staff pose in the kitchen at Benbow Lakes Resort. They have already started preparation of another meal at the resort. The resort was well known for its homemade chicken dinners.
In October of 1947, Bob Kelly, Seattle welterweight boxer, was determined to stop Tacoma's Charley Johnston when they met for the third time at the Tacoma Ice Palace. Their first bout was one of Tacoma's all time ring classics, a six round near draw awarded to Johnston. In the second bout, Kelly suffered a severe left eye gash requiring the State Examining Physician stop the fight. Kelly was ready to continue where things were left off, but unfortunately he went down to Johnston in a fourth round knockout in the October 16th fight. Kelly was managed by Eddie Marino. (T.
