Nearly 40 local Boy Scouts and scout masters helped the 1947 Community Chest campaign by posting pole cards along Tacoma streets to keep Tacoma citizens aware of the upcoming campaign. Cannaregio loading at Port piers, ordered by Chauncey Griggs. Pasquale Mazella, master of the Italian ship "Cannaregio" holds a sextant in this photograph from August of 1947. While in Tacoma he told of his wartime experiences: during World War I he lost his ship in the Mediterranean, during World War II he dodged torpedoes from American submarines and was taken prisoner in Japan after his ship was scuttled while being overhauled in Kobe and was imprisoned for three years. The Elks Majorettes performed at the baseball game between Tacoma and Yakima at Tiger Park on August 15, 1947. The young ladies in the Majorettes had recently placed second at the National Elks convention in Portland, Oregon. The Yakima Stars beat the Tigers 16 to 10 in a slug fest. L-R, J.R. In August of 1947, noted Tacoma restaurateur and sportsman Anton Barcott was photographed outside the Washington Hardware Company at 922-24 Pacific Avenue hefting a large salmon over his shoulder on a hook. The fish was almost as long as he was tall. This photograph was taken the year after Anton took over the management of the California Oyster House from his father John Barcott, Sr. He eventually closed the Oyster House and opened his own restaurant, Harbor Lights, on the Tacoma waterfront.

On Sept. 15, 1946, at the awards ceremony of the First Annual Elks' Salmon Derby, Jerry Geeham, the master of ceremonies, in a white t-shirt, and an unidentified Elks member battled with an octopus. Nada Van Alstine, Tacoma Times Society Editor, has decided to take flying lessons at Oswald Flying Service. Howard C. Peterson is the Chief Pilot and Flying Instructor at Oswald. Howard had to use six pillows and cushions to help Nada reach the airplane pedals, since she is only four feet and ten inches tall. Nada has really enjoyed her flying lessons (T. The Tacoma Athletic Commision sponsored the 5th annual Grid-Go-Round in 1947. The game brought together the teams from Lincoln, Stadium, Bellarmine and Clover Park in the local football inaugural. The Grid-Go-Round was played as an elimination affair with the four teams drawing for first round opponents, looser playing looser in the third period and the winners meeting in the final stanza. The fire of 1944 happened in the midst of World War II therefore, Children's Industrial Home was not able to rebuild until several years later. In 1946 they celebrated 55 years of serving Tacoma's children, and announced the beginning of the rebuilding of the new main facilities. Visiting Hawaiian business people at Point Defiance, Times, Burt McMurtrie. Members of the Ship Mates, the women's auxiliary of the Tacoma Yacht Club, presented Northwesern-style, evergreen leis to the Hawaiian business people who visited Tacoma on a three-day good will tour. The leis are made of cedar, fern and other greenery. The Hawaiians would follow their age-old tradition of throwing the leis overboard as an expression that they hope to return some day. While they were in Tacoma they discussed trade possibilities with members of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. They left Point Definace for Olympia aboard a fleet of Tacoma-built Fairliners. On Thursday October 9, 1947, the Tacoma Charter of Building Laborers and Hod Carriers honored three members with honorary life membership at a dinner in their union hall. D. L. McInnis became a member in 1916; Joe Collins in 1917; and Dan Avery , a member of the local in Denver, CO in 1888, helped establish the Tacoma chapter when he moved to Tacoma in 1905 and was present when it received its charter in 1911.
