Griffin Fuel Company along with many other prominent Tacoma business and organizations were getting ready the the annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Parade. Their float was covered in daffodils and was using the Harem motif, but would also include the infamous "Lulubelle Griffin", a regular in the Tacoma parade scene. Ed Griffin was President of Griffin Fuel Company in Tacoma.

Puyallup Valley's Daffodil Festival Parade along Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma was a great success. View of the Tacoma City Light float with two daffodil swans in a floral decked boat, a woman is nestled among the daffodils. This float was the Grand Sweepstakes Winner out of 63 entries. The judges unanimously chose this float as the winner (T.N.T., 3/29/47, p. 1).

The annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade had 63 entries that went along Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. The Daffodil Festival would continue through the weekend with dances and a water regatta. Ivanhoe Commandery of the Knights Templar. Members of the Knights Templar are dressed in decorated robes, uniforms, hats and crowns in front of a stage hung with a large cross at the Masonic Temple. York Rites delegates to the annual state convention arrived Saturday, May 10, 1947, for meetings of the three grand bodies. The meetings of the twenty-eight commanderies of the Knights Templar was highlighted by a parade from the Masonic Temple to the First Christian Church on May 11th, 1947. This was the 60th conclave of grand commandery of Knights Templar of Washington (T.Times, 5/9/1947, p.1)

On March 16, 1947, Tacoma reached a new record high of 67 degrees. Summer-like weather had children and adults out and about enjoying the sunshine. These four boys tried their hand at rafting along Hoodlum Lake, located near Franklin Elementary School. Hoodlum Lake was later drained during the development of Franklin Park. At 2 a.m. on Thursday May 15, 1947, 53 white-faced steer calves that were being unloaded from a truck at Carstens meat packing plant, on the tideflats, broke loose and took off down the railroad tracks toward town at high speed. The cattle, each weighing about 250 pounds, were soon stampeding throughout the city. After quite a chase, Sam Kimball (left) and Robert Miller, both taxi drivers, were able to catch one of the calves, and it was returned to Carstens. (T.Times, 5/15/1947, p.1)

The Cheney Stud brand carries a stud horse imprinted on the ends and faces of Cheney Studs, it quickly became recognized throughout the industry as a sign of top quality. The demand for eight foot Cheney Studs dramatically increased while the availability of suitable tie lumber for the portable mills and the market for railroad ties decreased. Cheney Lumber Co. was a modern stud mill, providing Tacoma and national industries with the building material most needed. Cheney had been at their current site since 1942, they were located on the west side of Port of Tacoma Road, north of East 11th Street. Loading a shipment of lumber from Cheney Lumber Company was made easier by the Cheney's facilities and dock on Sitcum Waterway. Cranes could load directly from railroad cars with tracks on the dock. TPL-5677

Ben B. Cheney founded Cheney Lumber Co. in 1936. The Cheney Co. was originally established to manufacture railroad ties. Timber was purchased and resold to small portable tie mills manufacturing ties for both domestic and foreign markets. Cheney eventually set out to strategically redevelop the 12 foot stud, prices would drop and less lumber would be wasted, making the 8 foot stud quite popular. Between 50,000 and 60,000 people gathered along the downtown Tacoma streets to view the impressive Puyallup Valley annual Daffodil Festival Parade. The parade began by inaugurating the inclusion of army units, a band and marching men from Fort Lewis would lead the parade participants. The students at Hawthorne Grade School presented a musical at the PTA meeting. The springtime program was directed by Gilda Holgerson. The festivities included most of the students at Hawthorne and featured an Easter parade, crowning of a festival queen and many chorus numbers. The Tacoma Afifi Shriners were boarding a special train at Union Depot and heading to Helena, Montana for the Pacific Northwest Shrine Association Annual Conclave. They would first travel to Spokane, where additional train cars would be added and Spokane Shriners would travel with them to Helena. Rainbow Convention. Pierce County Rainbow Girls hosted the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls June 22, 23 and 24, 1947. 1,500 girls from Washington, Idaho and Alaska met for the 25th anniversary of Rainbow in Washington State. Fifteen young women wearing floor length gowns and heart-shaped hats. A piano and flower decorations can be seen on the stage behind them. (T.Times, 6/19/1947)

Tommy Gibbons is back in the ring, only this time he is giving the boys at the Tacoma Boys Club boxing tips. Gibbons is now the Sheriff of Ramsey County, Minnesota and is very active in aiding to prevent juvenile delinquency. Tommy's stop in Tacoma was one of many throughout the West Coast, he was campaigning to get support for the 1951 National Bowling Congress (T. Times, 5/1/47, p. 18).

Several men enjoy a toast at the wedding of Dorothy Ann Simpson. Miss Simpson's engagement was announced in the Tacoma Times May 10, 1947. She was the daughter of J.P. and Hazel M. Simpson. She and Mr. John J. Wilson Jr., of Boston, Massachusetts, were married at St. Patrick's Church on June 28, 1947. The reception was held at the home of the bride. The Tacoma Philharmonic Orchestra performed four times at the Temple Theatre. They had a special performance with two local pianists, Lennard Anderson and Herbert Horn.
