Copy of Old Donnelly Hotel, Times, Busselle. This photo was published in the Tacoma Times in September of 1947 to show the street cars that used to run on Pacific Avenue and up 9th Street. In 1947 Tacoma undertook a major project to repave the main "hill" streets in the downtown shopping district. While ripping out the several layers of street surfacing built up since the pioneer days, the power shovels unearthed some of the original ties from the old street car line. The Donnelly Hotel (originally the Fife) stood at the corner of 9th and Pacific from 1897 to 1925. In 1925 it was demolished. The Motoramp Garage was built on the site. Reverend Arthur Bell and his wife Helen of St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church are pictured cutting into a beautifully frosted cake in November of 1947 as his congregation celebrated the reverend's twenty five years of faithful service. 250 friends attended the surprise church service honoring Reverend Bell's work at the north end church after which he was surprised again with the presentation of a new four-door Chevrolet sedan from his church family. He had come to Tacoma to assist Bishop Lemuel Wells and promised to stay a year and perhaps longer if his (then) frail health improved and if the people of his church (then called St. Mark's) wanted him to stay. That one year grew to 25 by 1947. Reverend Bell's diligent efforts made it possible to reconstruct the historic St. Luke's church bit-by-bit at 36th & North Gove from its original location at 6th & Broadway. (T. Times, 11/4/47, p. 18-article & alternate photograph; TNT 11-4-47, p. 1, 13-article & alternate photograph).

On October 15, 1940, the Ladies' Musical Club held a Golden Jubilee Celebration concert and tea at the Weyerhaeuser Hall at the YWCA. The concert was a reproduction of the first program of the club held on October 28, 1890 in the home of Mrs. C.J. Kershaw. The following tea was served on fifty year old settings and members were requested to dress in Gay Nineties style. Current members plus over 20 charter members attended. The Club was the first music association of its type to form west of Chicago. The first roster of the club represented all of the first families of church, civic, industrial, commercial and financial leaders. Through the years, the organization has brought talented performers to Tacoma and has helped to develop local young musicians. (T.Times 10/4/1940, pg. 3)
