Copy of artist's rendering of the new elementary school for Alder, Elbe & Ashford, Washington, school district #404. Lance, McGuire and Muri, Architects. "Columbia Crest" was the name chosen for the school. It was submitted in the naming contest by student Barbara Ann Barnett, based on the excellent view from the school's site of the Columbia Crest on Mount Rainier. 12 contractors were expected to submit bids on construction on Feb. 13th, 1951. Bids were reopened on March 5, 1951 and earlier bids rejected when the decision was made to eliminate a multipurpose room from the specifications. Construction was underway by April of 1951 for the six room school for a cost of $181,000, the multipurpose room to be added later as funds were available. Located halfway between Elbe and Ashford, the school was fire and earthquake proof and built to serve 200 students. (TNT 2/1/1951, 2/23/1951 & 4/29/1951)

This "small fry" float representing the little old lady who lived in a shoe nursery rhyme passes down Pacific Ave. in the 1950 Daffodil Parade. The little old lady and her many children ride on the float. The Daffodil Parades had no theme until after 1951. The parade operated on a very small budget of about $5,000 financed through the sale of 50 cent daffodil buttons and contributions. Daffodil growers, although not the parade's biggest supporters, ended up being the biggest contributors, delivering approximately 1,000,000 flowers to the parade at a price well below market price.

New machinery went into operation in December 1949 at Aaberg Fuel Company's yard between East Bay Street and the Puyallup River, at the foot of Puyallup Avenue. When drivers backed their trucks into the coal filling stations at Aaberg's, the trucks were filled automatically. A system of long conveyors was used to move the coal into the hoppers that filled the trucks. The coveyors automatically sorted the coal by grade. Each hopper could hold from 25 to 40 tons of coal. The Aaberg system was the first of its kind in the world, and was designed by Herbert Johnson Jr., the head of the company. (TNT, 12/14/1949, p.11, 12 & 13)
