Nalley's opened a new potato chip factory which houses a continuous chip frier. Only Kennebec potatoes were used by Nalley's to make potato chips. After harvesting the potatoes were held in a tempering room until the sugar content reverted, through natural processes, to starch. They were then dropped by a lift truck into a hopper where they began their journey along conveyor belts for washing, peeling, inspection, slicing, and rinsing. Chips were dropped into a long kettle where an employee controled the speed at which the chips were propelled through the hot oil. Here potato chips come down a conveyor belt and are reviewed by two workers for quality. The chips continue through a machine with a hood and then out of sight on the left. The factory contained a 10,000 gallon fuel tank to supply potato chip friers and two 5,000 gallon salad oil tanks. Three large air conditioned rooms stored the chips. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph, a telephone operator's switchboard, used to connect the calling party to the party being called. Incoming calls light up an area of the switchboard. The operator plugs the end of a wire into the hole in the switchboard that designates the phone near the person being called. If that line is in use it is already lit and the operator can ask the caller if they want to wait or call back. The edge of another switchboard can be seen on the right-hand side.

Former Tacoma mayor and recently elected U.S. Senator Harry P. Cain watches with admiration at the swiftly moving fingers of pianist Dorothy Helen Eustis in a November 16, 1946, photograph. Miss Eustis was in town for a concert at the Lakewood Theater scheduled for Monday, November 18th. Unfortunately, heavy snows forced cancellation of the performance, Miss Eustis' only Northwest appearance of the year. She was born in Seattle in 1916 and had studied piano there from childhood. At age 12, she was a soloist with the Seattle Symhony Orchestra and later in her teens performed with conductor Sir Thomas Beecham and pianist Jose Iturbi. Miss Eustis also was a soloist at Carnegie Hall and debuted at New York's Town Hall. Later in life, family and friends lost track of her when she moved to Europe. She was finally found in a Venice hospital in 1995; her mental condition had rendered her nearly mute and uncommunicative. After two years in the hospital, she was transported to a Catholic convent nursing home in Florence until her death in 2001. ALBUM 13.
