Pierce County Painters and Decorators Association. Nine men attend a meeting. The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America local union. Berger M. Antonsen was president of the local, L.K. Mikkelsen served as secretary and manager, Stanley Tystad was secretary and Gunnar Leggerini, L.P. Bidwel, and Albin Danielson were members. Gunnar Leggerini was also president of the Washington State Council of Painters and Decorators. Mr. Leggerini is believed to be seated, second from right. During the summer of 1946, while Tacoma's school age children were on vacation, a group of police candidates were taking classes at Stadium High School. At the end of August, 37 of the candidates received diplomas and were declared full-fledged members of the Tacoma Police Department. Attending the graduation were a number of veterans of the Tacoma and Seattle police departments including: Police Captain A.E. Farrar, third from the left in the front row; Police Chief P.G. Gregg, in a dark suit and white hat; Safety Commissioner R.S. Temme, in light colored suit and "skimmer"; and Seattle Police Captain Emile Vallet, next to Temme. In October of 1946, an unidentified young man, dressed as a Roman soldier, walked down Pacific Avenue carrying a shield with a poster advertising the movie "Caesar and Cleopatra" playing at the Music Box Theater. The film version of George Bernard Shaw's play starred Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra and Claude Rains as Ceasar.With a production cost of almost $6 million, it was one of the most expensive productions in cinema history up until then. ca. 1946. Photographs from the Turner Richards Studio with employees and family members. Three men and two women are photographed taking a coffee break in the back room of the studio. The two men on the right are Nelson and Ed Richards, two of four active owners of the studio. The woman seated has been identified as Velda Inez (Vink) Richards, the wife of Nelson Richards. According to her April 11, 2012 obituary, Velda Richards became an accomplished portrait and wedding photographer and in 1959, manager of the Richard's Villa Plaza Portrait Studio. Mrs. Richards was predeceased by husband Nelson in 1980 and only child Steven in 1986. She passed away on March 27, 2012 in Portland. Portrait of Harry Sprinker. Harry Sprinker was the Pierce County Commissioner for 20 years. He was not elected when he ran for that office in 1946 but was elected to that post in 1948. He became known as "Mr. County Commissioner". He was chair of the Public Lands Committee of the National Association of County Officials and vice president of the Washington State Association of County Commissioners. He believed that citizens received more for their tax dollar from county governments than any other government. He was born in Hellinwood, Kansas in 1896 and died in Tacoma in 1991 at the age of 85. ca. 1946. This is a view of Gravelly Lake as seen through the trees on the extensive grounds of the Wayne W. Keyes property circa 1946. Mr. Keyes, a prominent local attorney for many years, had purchased in 1921 the formerly named "Sunnybank" residence built for Charles A. Foster located at 11437 Gravelly Lake Dr. S.W. in the Lakes District. The gardens of the now named Keyes Mansion were opened occasionally for tours benefiting charitable causes. The Keyes Mansion appeared in the film, "Eleanor & Franklin," serving as the Roosevelts' summer "cottage" at Campobello. It was demolished in 1981 after being vacant since the death of Mrs. Keyes in 1969.

After operating a restaurant in the Tacoma Savings and Loan Building on South 9th Street for 20 years, Chris Sivertsen opened Sivertsen's Cafe, a restaurant and soda fountain at 321 East 26th Street, on October 18, 1946.
