Navy Mothers Club. The Tahoma chapter of the Navy Mothers Club met on Tuesday, May 6, 1969, at the Odd Fellows Temple for installation of new officers. Invitations were issued to the Puyallup and Sumner Navy Mothers Clubs and the general public was also invited to attend. Lt. Frank Thomas was the guest speaker for the event. Mrs. T.R. Baker was installed as the new commander by installing officer Mrs. Frank Parks. View of club members; each woman is wearing a corsage of daisies. Many of the women are wearing special volunteer service pins and bars presented by the club. A framed copy of the club's charter is on the wall behind the women. American Legion Last Man Club. Twelve men were in attendance on November 10, 1970, at a meeting of the American Legion Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 Last Man Club. The annual gathering was held at Brad's Restaurant, 9201 Pacific Ave. A plaque, adorned with two American flags, is on display with the names of past commanders. James P. Posed on the rooftop of the Winthrop Hotel with the towering Medical Arts Building prominently in the background are officers of the Department of Washington and Alaska, of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65. They were holding their 57th annual convention at the Winthrop from June 7-10, 1970. Believed to be in attendance was Mrs. Fayette Bell of Los Angeles, the organization's national president. Also believed to be pictured above was Mrs. John McDougall of Seattle, department president who presided over the convention's meetings. Among activities held during the convention was a memory banquet where a scholarship would be awarded to a college student who was a descendant of a Civil War veteran. United Good Neighbors. 30 executives on loan from various Tacoma businesses posed for a group portrait at the old Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, on November 3, 1971. Industry and government had loaned a total of 73 executives to the United Good Neighbors campaign who had been working since mid-August. The drive to collect funds for the UGN officially began on September 14th. The group's goal was to collect $1,928,000 in the campaign which was to end on November 12th, a bare two months away. Memorial services - Elks Temple. Memorial services to honor "absent Brothers" were held at the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 on Wednesday evening the 2nd of December, 1970. Large arrangements of flowers and small potted trees graced the stage steps. White gates were placed before a backdrop of trees and a large white building shown in the distance. Pilgrim candidates representing five high schools and sponsors at the Tacoma Club, Times, Mrs. McDonald. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored five outstanding Tacoma high school students as Pilgrimage candidates at a luncheon at the Tacoma Club. The Pilgrimage candidates would submit an essay on American history and government. The winner of the state contest would be given a trip to Washington, D.C. The young women are wearing corsages. Corrine Engh from Clover Park High School is seated on the left. Beverly Highland from Sumner High School is seated, second from the right. Barbara Cope from Orting High School is standing fourth from the left. Freda Schuler from Fife High School and Doris Beardsley from Lincoln High School are standing, fourth and third from the right. Installation of officers, White Shrine Masonic Temple, studio spec. The White Shrine of Jerusalem was founded as a Christian auxiliary to Freemasons in the United States. There were 69,000 members in 1995. Until 1953 members of the White Shrine of Jerusalem were required to be members of the Eastern Star. The original White Shrine of Jerusalem was founded by Charles D. Magee in Chicago on October 23, 1894. Membership is open to Master Masons as well as their wives, mothers, daughters, widows, and sisters. In 1948, three women Amvets members discuss world events over drinks and cigarettes. They were with a group of one hundred and thirty Amvets attending a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. The guest of honor was National Commander Edgar C. Corry who spoke on the topic "Peace Through National Preparedness." (T. Times, 5/12/48, p. 3).

40 et 8 Parade, Times, Sandegren. The 40 et 8 auxiliary of the American Legion marched through downtown Tacoma August 26, 1948, presenting the Goof Parade. This view shows the drum and bugle corps marching in their nightshirts. Some wear sleeping caps as well. They march along Pacific Avenue in front of the North Pacific Bank Note Company above Puget Sound Auto Electric and Western Auto Supply Company. 40 et 8 Parade, Times, Sandegren. The American Legion, Department of Washington, held its annual convention in Tacoma starting August 25, 1948, for a four-day meeting. The second day of the convention the 40 et 8 auxilliary held their Goof Parade through downtown Tacoma. Burmeister was the social chairman of the silver tea held May 27, 1947, at the home of Paul B. and Genevieve M. Smith, by the newly formed Dr. Millard J. Nelson Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. 400 guests were invited to the event. Mrs. Smith, in a floor length, floral print dress and white jacket stands outside in a garden setting. Ivanhoe Commandery of the Knights Templar. Members of the Knights Templar are dressed in decorated robes, uniforms, hats and crowns in front of a stage hung with a large cross at the Masonic Temple. York Rites delegates to the annual state convention arrived Saturday, May 10, 1947, for meetings of the three grand bodies. The meetings of the twenty-eight commanderies of the Knights Templar was highlighted by a parade from the Masonic Temple to the First Christian Church on May 11th, 1947. This was the 60th conclave of grand commandery of Knights Templar of Washington (T.Times, 5/9/1947, p.1)

Rainbow Convention. Pierce County Rainbow Girls hosted the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls June 22, 23 and 24, 1947. 1,500 girls from Washington, Idaho and Alaska met for the 25th anniversary of Rainbow in Washington State. Fifteen young women wearing floor length gowns and heart-shaped hats. A piano and flower decorations can be seen on the stage behind them. (T.Times, 6/19/1947)

Benbow Lakes, Red Cross Aquatic School for the Northwest, 75 men and 56 women. The Red Cross Pierce County Chapter held a 10-day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes, Kapowsin, Washington. It was one of six such schools operated by the Red Cross in the United States. The canoe in this photograph has been identified as a Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits at their shop on Day Island. The canoe features a full sailing rig also built by the brothers. Eastern Star Convention at Armory. Mrs. Eva Holland Hamilton of Chicago is on the right. She was the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter and was a visitor throughout the 59th annual session of Order of the Eastern Star held in Tacoma in June 1947. Mrs. Stephen J. Chadwick of Olympia, a past Most Worthy Matron of the General Grand Chapter, was affectionately known as "the First Lady" in Washington Eastern Star. She is wearing an overblouse of lace and crochet. Eastern Star Convention at the New Yorker Cafe, Margaret Kinnich. The Grand Chapter of Washington Order of Eastern Star held its session in Tacoma June 19 - 21, 1947. More than 2,000 members and guests were expected from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and British Columbia. National President of the Cooks, Waiters, Waitresses and Bartenders Union christening new building. This new building was purchased for $68,500 and will house the new local union headquarters. The new building will have a comfortable lobby, clubroom, union hall and kitchen. The building is expected to be dedicated in December of this year. In 1919 the Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 of the American Legion drew together a group of veterans at the Tacoma Armory to consider an organization and elect a delegate to the first national convention of the Legion in St. Louis. Regular meetings started soon afterwards. Since then new veterans are inducted on a regular basis.
