1938 Stadium High School Baseball Team. 24 boys and Coach John Heinrick lined up on field in the Stadium Bowl. Baseball was entering its third year at Stadium, celebrated with new uniforms with a roaring Bengal face on the jersey and entry into the city league with Lincoln and Bellarmine.

College of Puget Sound graduation exercises. Graduates, proudly wearing their caps and gowns, march three across into Jones Hall. At the 51st commencement exercises held at CPS, 92 seniors and 7 post graduates would be receiving their diplomas. Lincoln High School's A Cappella Choir left by train on March 26, 1938, to compete in the St. Louis Music Festival. The 60-member choir took along 10,000 daffodils to promote the area's Daffodil Festival. Mayor George Smitley, left, and Mayor-elect John Siegel, right, are on hand for the choir's send-off. Daffodil Festival Attendant Bernice Daniel of Lincoln High School, holds a bouquet of daffodils and choir manager, Milton Evans, wears a daffodil lei. Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. Back row, Dick Donelson, Dave Livingston, Dave Doud, Coach Lowman, Fred Angus, Warren Harvey and George Warfer. College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T. Big Buddy Day Marymount Military Academy. Norton Clapp, left, with tennis racket shakes hands with a young tennis player over the net on the academy's tennis courts. Building in background. Big Buddy Day was an annual event at the Academy where men and boys could participate in sports and programs together. The school had rigid standards in academics and athletics. The teacher-student ratio was 1-6. By 1974, the military designation and uniforms were dropped and the school became primarily a boarding school catering to the wealthy.

Night school classes at Lincoln High School. On Monday and Thursday nights, over 1700 adult students descended on local schools to take part in the 61 classes offered in night school. This appears to be a shop class, one of the most popular offerings. The two students listening intently to the instructor are identified as Bill English, kneeling, and Jack Clark. (T. Stadium High School's 1939 Tigers Baseball Team portrait. Three rows of young men dressed in various baseball uniforms. The team, under the direction of Coach John Heinrick, back row on the left, won the city title in 1939 for the 3rd year in a row. They were victorious in 15 of their 18 outings. (T. The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. Stadium High School's 56th annual graduation exercises, held June 8th at the Armory for the Class of 1939. Students at the back of the photograph, audience in foreground. The graduating class totalled 653 students and the ceremony was estimated to be attended by over 2500 persons. The sign "Education for What?" states the theme of the four student commencement speakers. Betty Binns, Helen Phill, and Robert Elliott tied for valedictory honors, each completing 3 years of study with straight A's. Class president Maynard Miller joined them as a speaker.
