Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T. Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. Dinner at Tacoma Club for 73rd birthday of Sydney Albert "Sam" Perkins, local tycoon and former newspaper editor. The dinner was attended by over 100 of Mr. Perkins's friends and business associates. During his 50 years in Tacoma, he had served as the partner of W.P. Bonney in a wholesale and retail drug business, in Washington D.C. as the secretary of Mark Hanna and as owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News.

Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.

In May of 1939, the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers met on the campus of the College of Puget Sound to have their photograph taken for an exhibit at the New York Worlds Fair. In this picture, three of the club members are seen with one of the clubs larger telescopes. The young fellow looking through the telescope is Jimmy Wiborg, who was 14-years-old and the youngest member of the club. Jimmy had just recently finished building his own telescope. It had taken him two years to build, including 8 months to grind and polish the six-inch mirror. In this photograph Jimmy is flanked by (left) W.H. Crump, past-president of the club, and Fred Myers, meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau. (T. Times, 5/16/1938, p. 16).

Fourteen year old Jimmy Wiborg gazes through a telescope on the campus of the College of Puget Sound in May of 1939. He is the youngest member of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers. Other members pictured are, left to right, Fred Myers (meteorologist with the US Weather Bureau) and W.H. Crump (past president of the organization.) The group was posing for a series of pictures scheduled to be exhibited at the New York World's Fair. The group had constructed over 30 telescopes of varying sizes and power. The one pictured was built by Mr. Crump. The club was currently meeting on the campus of CPS, but had purchased property at 968 McKinley Road on McKinley Hill, with the intention of building a clubhouse and observatory. (T. In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. Daughters of Italy (Tacoma);

At mid-afternoon on Sunday June 15, 1941 three Army B-25 Mitchell medium bombers swooped in over the flotilla of boats off Point Defiance Park and began "strafing" the crowd of Tacomans who packed the beach. So began the dramatic war games enacted at the 4th Annual Young Men's Business Club Water Carnival. In a spectacular demonstration of the army's war preparedness, eight of the army's newest landing boats carried 312 fully equipped troops up to the shore. Armed with machine guns and mounted bayonets, the soldiers stormed onto the beach under the cover of a curtain of smoke laid down by an army attack plane. (T. Times 6/16/1941 p.1)

One of the main attractions of the Fourth Annual Young Men's Business Club Water Carnival of 1941 was an hour long "battle" staged by troops from Fort Lewis and McCord Field. In a coordinated invasion of Point Defiance Beach, landing boats hit the shore as a trio of bombers roared in and "strafed" the beach. As the troops made their way onto dry land, they had to fight a second force of soldiers who were defending the park. Noicy but harmless ammunition was used. (T.Times 6-16-1941 p.1)

Will Poelle, a Stewart Jr. High art student, and Bernice Pratt, an art student at Lincoln H.S., were the two 1st place winners in the American Legion poppy poster contest held in May of 1941. Sponsored by two Legion auxiliaries, Rhodes Unit No. 2 and Tacoma Unit No. 138, the poster contest preceded the annual Legion poppy sale held May 23rd and 24th. Money collected through the sale of poppies went to aid disabled veterans and needy children of deceased and disabled veterans. Four members of the Spinster Club donned summery formal gowns to help publicize the third annual Dixie Ball which was scheduled to be held on May 10, 1941 in the Crystal Ballroom at the Winthrop Hotel. Posed left to right, Elinor Erickson, Dixie Thompson, Anne Louise Greiwe and Virginia Austin were photographed just below the veranda of the August Von Boecklin home at 74 East Road. The third annual "I Am an American" Day observance, sponsored by the Tacoma Americanization Council, was held in May of 1941 at Jason Lee Middle School. Invitations were sent by the Americanization Council to over 600 newly naturalized and first generation American citizens. There were about 35 different nationalities represented at the impressive and patriotic ceremonies. Governor Arthur B. Langlie, Tacoma Mayor Harry P. Cain and Superior Court Judge Ernest B. Card delivered addresses of welcome. Many other dignitaries were in attendance including Federal Judge Lloyd L. Black, jurist whose court in Tacoma saw nearly 600 persons attain American citizenship during the past year and who received a silent standing tribute by the assembled new citizens before his brief speech.
