Star Iron & Steel Company bridge fabricated in five days for Whidbey Island-Mukilteo ferry landing. Becholdt trailer pulled by Cooney Transfer & Storage Company truck on August 23, 1938, transports the 30,000 pound, 64-foot long steel bridge. (T. Times, 8/23/1938, p.3).

The Mountain Lumber Company, February 1939. The Mountain Lumber Company, at 919 East F. Street, was built in 1924 and began cutting lumber in February of 1925. The main mill building was destroyed by fire in July of 1931. The company re-opened before the end of the year, and they were part of Tacoma's busy waterfront until the mid-1940s.

The destroyer USS Wilson (#408) was launched April 12,1939 at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton. On hand for the launching were, left to right, Rear Admiral E. B. Fenner, Mrs. Fenner (sponsor), Governor Clarence Martin, Mrs. Arthur B. Langlie, Major General Walter C. Sweeney. Mrs. Sweeney, and Seattle Mayor Arthur Langlie. The vessel was named after Seaman Charles Wilson, who was recognized for distinguished service in the Navy during the Civil War. (T.Times 4/13/1939, pg. 20)

On April 17, 1941, the 205th Coast Artillery anti-aircraft unit participated in "war games" at the industrial waterfront of Tacoma. The unit was defending the industrial lands, particularly the shipyards, from attack by airplane. Here, soldiers set up a large anti-aircraft cannon in a grove of trees located across the highway from Rayonier, Inc. (T. Times 4/18/1941, pg. 1)

On April 17, 1941, the 205th Coast Artillery (anti-aircraft) unit conducted a trial run on defending Tacoma's industrial plants and shipyards from attack by airplane. One of the major problems was how to camouflage the over 200 trucks used to transport the men and equipment. Here boards are being used to disguise two of the trucks. (T. Times 4/18/1941, pg.1)

Officers of the "Oregon" and their wives pose on the deck. On the left is the Captain, or Master as denoted by his cap, and on the right is the Chief Engineer. The Oregon was built at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp. as Hull #3 and MC 121 and was launched as the Cape Cleare. The vessel sunk in 1941. TPL-1872

This was how the Tacoma yard of the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation appeared in October of 1941. The view was looking southeast and showed the yard's enlargement under the US Maritime Commission facilities contract. Under construction were five additional new ways, more dockage space and expanded fabrication facilities. All were expected to be completed in 1942. After expansion, the shipyard would employ over 8,000 persons. TPL-9953

ca. 1942. In this advertising photo, a waitress or car hop carries a tray with a wax paper wrapped sandwich, a coffee cup and saucer, a clear glass carafe of milk and a can of Acme beer. The ads for Acme in July of 1942 advocated adding a refreshing, thirst quenching beer to your lunch. It, according to the ad, put an "edge" on your appetite and made good food taste better. It further said that being a "light beer," it caused no after lunch slow down when you returned to work. Acme, according to its ads, was brewed with Pacific Northwest hops and barley. It was made by Acme Brewing in San Francisco and distributed in Tacoma by Century Distributing Co., 2523 Jefferson Ave. TPL-10215

New fence around Air Reduction Company and old Peterman Manufacturing Company fence. In May of 1942, construction was begun on the Air Reduction Company, an oxygen manufacturing company, located at 702 Alexander Ave. Peterman Manufacturing had been located at 600 Alexander Ave. but in June of 1942 they moved to Garibaldi, Oregon. Their location had been taken over by the government for expansion of the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co., 100 Alexander Ave. The expansion was needed due to the increase of wartime contracts during World War II. Oxygen gas was used in large quantities for cutting steel plates in ship building and was also used in welding. The Air Reduction plant was able to support the war effort by producing the chemical necessary for building government vessels, and making it available locally.

St. Regis Paper Company (Kraft Pulp Division), overaged destroyer to be sunk for breakwater. The 20-year-old destroyer, name unknown, was to be sunk in Commencement Bay to provide protection for the St. Regis wharf. Her sister ship had previously been scuttled in British Columbia, also for use as a breakwater. Both ships had been resting in Lake Washington for ten years. (T. Times, 9-19-1940, p. 1- alt. photo)
