The city is dressed in her finest, preparing for the July 22, 1939 parade celebrating Washington's 50th year of statehood. Looking north from the 1000 block of Pacific, Tacoma wears her parade finery in preparation for the Golden Jubilee festivities on July 22, 1939. American flags and banners celebrating the Jubilee and welcoming the Navy are strung across the street. Street lamps are hung with flags. Huge flags are draped from the Ionic columns of the Bank of California at 1011-13 Pacific Ave. Near the end of the street on the right can be seen the circular City Hall Annex (formerly the Northern Pacific Headquarters) at 621 Pacific Ave. TPL-2497

Golden Jubilee. Sonny Johns shoots arrow for archery demonstration to large group of spectators in 900 block of newly paved Pacific Avenue. Construction forms are still lying in street. Sonny was the 1938 Washington State Junior Archery champion and the Northwest Junior Champion. At the June 1938 competition, he had won the flight shoot, sending the arrow 179 feet, just 21 feet short of two blocks.

On July 16, 1939 an unidentified woman in high-topped logging boots took part in the birling exhibition that was part of the entertainment at the Water Carnival held at Point Defiance Park on the opening day of the Washington State Golden Jubilee celebration in Tacoma. Tacoma had major events scheduled for every day of the jubilee celebration from the first day on July 16th through Sunday the 23rd. The Water Carnival attracted 30,000 spectators to the four-hour saltwater spectacle that include boat races, an air show by Tex Rankin and his star flyers, and exhibitions of diving, water skiing, life saving techniques, and birling. Birling, the art and science of log rolling, was popular in the logging regions of the Pacific Northwest. (TNT 7/17/1939 p.1)

Golden Jubilee Water Carnival at Point Defiance, Sea Scout races. The Scouts pull hard at their oars, trying to propel their boat to the winning position. The most exciting event at the Golden Jubilee Water Carnival, held July 16, 1939 at Point Defiance, was the tugboat race. Five tugs churned through the choppy water from Crab Point to the Pavilion, a course of 1 1/4 mile. Winner Peter Foss crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, belching black smoke and carrying Captain Drew Foss to victory. Other competitors were the second place Fearless, owned by Tacoma Tug & Barge Co., the Capt. O.G. Olson from Olson Tug & Barge, the Foss #12 and the Morning Star of Shelton. (T. An enormous crowd of 30,000 has turned out to watch the water races and entertainment at the Golden Jubilee Water Carnival, held July 16, 1939 at Point Defiance. They line every available inch of dock and window space at the Point Defiance Pavilion. Large yachts and smaller crafts have also docked to enjoy the show. This was the kick off event for Golden Jubilee, the celebration of Washington State's 50th anniversary of statehood.

Golden Jubilee Water Carnival at Point Defiance, held July 16, 1939. Part of the entertainment was a thrilling water ski show presented by Mrs. Margaret Rust and Don Callison of Hoods Canal. Mrs. Rust is pictured just rising up on her skis from the water. Her yacht Electra was docked nearby, so that she could view the remainder of the show in comfort. (T. Times 7/17/1939, pg. 1)

On the first day of July, 1939, 23 year old Margaret Franich, candidate for Golden Jubilee Queen, poses seated neatly on a stool. She was later crowned "Miss Pierce County" and was a contestant at the Miss Washington contest, where she came in second to Seattle's Potlatch Queen. She is dressed in a dark dress or suit, with matching white heels, handbag and wide brimmed picture hat. Miss Franich was a graduate of Stadium High School and a working girl, employed as a legal secretary to the state tax Commissioner in Olympia. (T. Times 6/20/1939, pg. 16)

She is classically attractive with softly curling brown hair, wide eyes under delicately arched brows and a cupid's bow mouth. Miss Franich was a graduate of Stadium High School, where she had taken part in the school operas. She served as the Hostess Queen of the 1939 all community picnic sponsored by the Maccabees at Glendawn Park at Five Mile Lake. Miss Franich was the winner of the Maccabees Smiles contest in 1938. On Tuesday evening, July 10, 1939, a half-dozen judges met at the Music Box Theatre and selected Amy Lou Murray from an original field of 35 candidates to be Jubilee Queen. Both Miss Murray and Miss Franich went on to compete in Seattle for the title of "Miss Washington" and the opportunity to represent Washington in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. (T. The Jubilee Princesses smile brightly at the Winthrop Hotel after the preliminary round of selection for the Jubilee Queen, held on June 26, 1939. The resulting six finalists, pictured here, were selected from a field of 26. The winner will be declared Jubilee Hostess Queen and the runner up Miss Pierce County. The remaining four princesses will reign over the four principal features of the celebration: the pageant, air show, water carnival and Mardi Gras festival, also called the "Village of Nations." Scenes from a preview performance of "Saga of the West." The pageant would cover the history of the west and be presented July 20, 21 and 22nd at the Stadium Bowl. During the Gay 90's episode, a team of four red shirted volunteer Fire Brigade members pull the big hose wagon, wound with cotton hose. The men are, left to right, Jack Frost, Ted Breuner (beside Frost,) Frank LeCompte and Tryg Blix (beside LeCompte.) This style of hose wagon was in use around 1880 and it is topped by ironwork featuring the fire company name "Alert." The Alert refers to the Alert Hose Company #2, a volunteer company that originated in 1885. In the pageant, their hats are labelled with the number 33. This dress rehearsal on July 18th was rained out halfway through. The cast would reassemble on the 19th to rehearse. (T. Times 7/19/1939, pg. 1)

The reviewing stand was crowded by over 200 dignitaries. 100,000 spectators lined the streets to see Tacoma's largest and most colorful parade, over 14 miles in length.

Brilliant sunshine greeted the one hundred thousand local residents and visitors who packed the streets of downtown Tacoma to view the Golden Jubilee parade. The 133 entries included over 60 floats, many from Washington counties, horses, thousands of military personnel marching with their bands, a horse-drawn fire engine and a tallyho coach. The "Famous Reichmuth Family" plays Swiss tunes for the crowd from the back of a flatbed truck during the Golden Jubilee Parade, July 22, 1939. Their regular location to perform was the Swiss Village at 1318 Broadway, where they played old-time Swiss and Scandinavian tunes for the dancers' enjoyment. The parade entry was also sponsored by Whitworth Fuel Co., 2513 No. Proctor, and Oil Sales & Service Co., 764 Commerce St. A lone child stands in the street beside the truck. The crowd can be seen in the background, 5-6 layers deep.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. The "Swiss Colony" entered this float in the parade. Its floral decorations include replicas of the United States and the Swiss flag on the front. A model of the Alps takes up most of the float. Two accordion players and several people in native costumes populate the float. It is accompanied by four girls in Swiss outfits walking beside the float. The crowd along the parade route, several people deep, can be seen in the background. The front row sits in chairs, while those in back stand or perch on the buildings for a better view.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. This float, created by KVI Broadcasting, takes a nostalgic look back to the time when the "news" consisted of two women visiting over their backyard fence. The structure on the float is "Ye Olde Woode Shedde."
