The staff of the Progressive Italian-American Club stand behind the clubs newly modernized bar. The PIA Club was about to celebrate their remodeling by hosting a complimentary buffet luncheon for fraternal and social members and the press. The club, at 739 St. Helens, had been totally remodeled, at a cost of over $70,000 - almost twice the original budget. Rocco Manza, the club manager, and Frank A. Reda, the social chairman, had made elaborate preparations for the event. The same location was later home to Honan's Restaurant. (T. Times, 3/14/46, p. 9).

Swiss dance. Men and women seated at tables with streamers above. An array of beer mugs are on the table, coats and hats hang from hooks on the wall, framed pictures, a clock and trophy decorate the dining room. The dance is believed to have taken place at Swiss Hall, a multi-story building erected by the area's Swiss Society.

Formal photograph of Normanna Male Chorus at Normanna Hall. The Hall was the home of the Norway Club. The Chorus's costume carries out a nautical theme with blazers and Captain's hats. The Chorus, organized in 1888, was the oldest Norwegian singing organization in the west. The Chorus held its first sangerfest in Tacoma in 1906. The first director was Professor Carlo Sperati. George S. Johnson served as director for 30 years. The current conductor is Gunnar J. Malmin, center of the front row in the tuxedo, composer and director of PLC Choir of the West. The Normanna Male Chorus, led by Gunnar Malmin of Pacific Lutheran College, posed for a group picture on March 7, 1957. Professor Malmin, dressed in a dark tuxedo, is seated in the front row. Normanna Male Chorus was the oldest Norwegian singing organization in the west. It was formed in 1888 by Tacoma and Parkland men, and held its first Sangerfest in Tacoma in 1906. The first director was Professor Carlo Sperati; the present conductor Malmin has held the title since 1947. Normanna Male Chorus has approximately 50 members. Swiss dance. Two men with cigars tending bar. The dance may have been held at the Swiss Hall, a building erected by Tacomans of Swiss ancestry. Other photographs in the same series show that the dance was attended by a large crowd. The beer was apparently free.

The Normanna Male Chorus were scheduled for two events in March 1952. The chorus was joined by the Norwegian male choruses of Seattle, Everett, Bellingham and Portland for a concert March 16th in the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. March 28th the Normanna Male Chorus presented a minstrel show at Normanna Hall. Their director, Gunnar Malmin of the Pacific Lutheran College music faculty, is standing in the center of the front row. (TNT, 3/16/1952, p.D-13; 3/28/1952, p.B-6)

In October of 1936, members of the Scandinavian-American Democratic Club rallied for their party's candidates in the upcoming local and national elections. Portraits and signs for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Clarence Martin line the walls. Both men were seeking re-election, Roosevelt for the presidency and Martin for Washington State governor. The rally was held at Valhalla Hall on October 14, 1936, with the general public invited. Initiatives and amendments on the general election ballot were discussed. In August of 1941, a group of officers from the Puyallup Valley Japanese American Citizens League met with Raymond West of the National Bank of Washington to invest in defense savings bonds. The valley chapter of the league started in 1930 with 25 young American citizens of Japanese parentage. By 1941, the group had grown to 182 members. Seated are Satoru Sasaki, chapter president, and Lillian Mizukami. Standing are (l to r) Tad Yoshida, Tadako Tamura and Betty Sato. The young man standing behind Lillian Mizukami has been identified as Daizo (Dyke) Itami. (T. Times 08-07-1941 p.10)

The Normanna Male Chorus took part in Normanna's first minstrel show. The male chorus changed out of their natty dark jackets and white slacks for blackface makeup for their parts in the show. L-R, Willard Dergan, interlocutor; Gunnar Malmin, chorus director as "Ham Bone"; George W. Jacobsen, "Rastus"; Arthur Larson, "Dry Bones"; and Howard Knutson as "Sambo". The National Convention of the Order of Runeberg was held in Tacoma from August 10-12, 1922. Some of the officers and delegates, plus a small boy, posed for a group portrait in front of the First Church of the Evangelical Assocation, 1224 Martin Luther King Jr. Way (then "K" St.). There were 750 delegates and visiting members in attendance at the three-day convention. Alex Keoll of Seattle was elected the new president succeeding John Forsman of Duluth. The convention would reconvene in Superior, Wisconsin in 1926. The Order of Runeberg is an organization of Swedish-Finns and is named after Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a noted Finnish poet.
