One of the strangest social events of the 1920's & 1930's was the "Tom Thumb wedding," a mock wedding of a child couple impersonating the 1863 wedding of P.T. Barnum's famous midget couple, Charles Stratton (exhibited as Gen. Tom Thumb) and his miniature bride, Lavinia Warren. The pictured double Tom Thumb wedding was held April 16, 1937 at the St. Paul Methodist Church as a fund raiser, with proceeds going to the missionary society. The participants were, left to right, Harrison Killian (best man), Curtis Killian (Tom Thumb, groom), Shirley Clark (Jennie June, bride), Eddie Goodenough (minister), Buddy Cross (best man), Billy Goettling (Fred Finger, groom) and Barbara Ann Bowen (Nellie May, bride.) All of the children, with the exception of Goodenough, were four years old. Eddie Goodenough was the son of Rev. Frank Goodenough. In all, over 100 children, ages 4-11, took part in the pageant, impersonating wedding members and guests, including Pres. & Mrs. Roosevelt, movie stars and local city officials and personalities. On May 15, 1941, Kathleen Marie Kelly and Archie Henry Pozzi married at the First Congregational Church in Everett. The bride was a former Tacoman. The wedding was followed by a reception in the Guild Hall. The couple is shown dodging rice as they leave the reception. The bride wears a garnet suit, black hat and corsage of orchids. The couple were alumni of the University of Washington and made their first home in Carson City, Nev. (T. Times 10/11/1941)

Brustad - Vandenberg wedding at Fort Lewis. Florence Eleanor Brustad exchanged vows with Lt. Robert E. Vandenberg in the Fort Lewis Chapel on February 2, 1940. She is the daughter of the J.F. Brustads and he is the son of the Eben Vandenbergs, both of Tacoma. The bride is a member of the Beta Phi Kappa sorority at whose meeting her surprise engagement was announced in January of 1940. She is also a member of the Tacoma Ski Club of which Lt. Vandenberg is the president. He is currently an aide to Brig. General Maurice Thompson at Camp Murray. Ride on muleback of Lt. Jack Murphy and his bride at Fort Lewis on April 12, 1941. Date is probably incorrect as Salt Lake City natives Lt. Jack M. Murphy and his bride wed on February 22, 1941. His fellow officers wanted to help celebrate but due to inclement weather, this unique method of mule riding was not accomplished until March 9th. The bride and groom are pictured above, each strapped and in wicker chairs aboard a patient mule. They were then led on quite a ride to the Officers Club for a reception. (T. The bride stands in the center attired in white chiffon velvet. The two candle lighters stand at the ends, Catherine Schumacher and Lou Johnson. The Maid of Honor was Marjorie Naylor and the bridesmaids were Jean Rea, Louise Gerwels, Dorothy Rowland and Dorthea Thies. They are all attired in white chiffon.
