On September 14, 1939 Tacoma Times editor Leonard Langlow, smoking a cigar, was photographed holding a copy of the last Times paper to come off the newspaper's old presses. The old press was abandoned after this run and full time printing was transferred to the new 125 ton Goss octuple press in the new Times building at 919 Market Street. The remainder of the Times' operation moved to the new building on February 10th, 1940. The Times went out of business on March 31, 1949. (T. Times 2/27/1940, pg. 7)

May 17, 1939 will be a Big Day at Clover Park High School. They will be dedicating their new athletic field as a memorial to Walter J. Thompson, second from left, Tacoma and Gravelly Lake pioneer. Pictured with Mr. Thompson are, left to right, School Superintendent A.G. Hudtloff, Mr. Thompson, Mrs. A.S. Black and Ray Thompson. Mr. Walter Thompson holds the speech that he will read at the dedication for the new Clover Park athletic field. The field is named after Mr. Thompson, who donated the initial $1,000 to get the project started. It was completed as a W.P.A. project. In a separate ceremony, the Garden Club will dedicate the pictured plaque, on the stone, in memory of Mr. Thompson's deceased wife Amarilla Thompson. (T. Times 5/12/1939, pg. 7)

On June 9, 1939, the unidentified University-Union Club doorman opened the automobile door for E. F. Cardin, Jr. and Lorain Cousins, in formal attire, to enter the Club under the canvas-covered awning. The doorman's elegant white uniform added glamour to the evening event, attended by 500 guests, celebrating the clubs' merger. By 1938, the Union Club had been located in the elegant building at 539 Broadway for 50 years. In 1939, a decision was reached by the Union Club and the University Club to merge into one, the University-Union Club, at this location. The membership for the joint club was full at 450 members. On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Mr. Reagan was 35 at the time of this picture and lived with his wife and family at 5020 6th Ave. (T.Times 8/10/1939 p.1)

The small sons of Emory Reagan Sr. take a break from helping Dad paint the flagpole at the University Union Club. Emory Jr., 11, holds on to the rope that sends supplies up to Dad, eliminating the need for him to go up and down the pole repeatedly. Duane, 8, holds a paintbrush and Mickey, the family's two month old terrier. The senior Mr. Reagan remained aloft on the flagpole for 5 1/2 hours completing his paint job. Norwegian Crown Princess Martha and Major General A. J. Bowley during visit of the Princess and her husband, Crown Prince Olav (later Olav V), to Fort Lewis. The Crown Princess is wearing a black ensemble, white hat and silver fox furs. She is holding a bouquet of long stemmed roses. From this birds eye view beginning in the 1300 block of Broadway, you can look north and enjoy all of the Golden Jubilee celebration banners waving in the breeze. The city is dressed in her finest, preparing for the July 22, 1939 parade celebrating Washington's 50th year of statehood. Looking north from the 1000 block of Pacific, Tacoma wears her parade finery in preparation for the Golden Jubilee festivities on July 22, 1939. American flags and banners celebrating the Jubilee and welcoming the Navy are strung across the street. Street lamps are hung with flags. Huge flags are draped from the Ionic columns of the Bank of California at 1011-13 Pacific Ave. Near the end of the street on the right can be seen the circular City Hall Annex (formerly the Northern Pacific Headquarters) at 621 Pacific Ave. TPL-2497

Golden Jubilee. Sonny Johns shoots arrow for archery demonstration to large group of spectators in 900 block of newly paved Pacific Avenue. Construction forms are still lying in street. Sonny was the 1938 Washington State Junior Archery champion and the Northwest Junior Champion. At the June 1938 competition, he had won the flight shoot, sending the arrow 179 feet, just 21 feet short of two blocks.

On July 16, 1939 an unidentified woman in high-topped logging boots took part in the birling exhibition that was part of the entertainment at the Water Carnival held at Point Defiance Park on the opening day of the Washington State Golden Jubilee celebration in Tacoma. Tacoma had major events scheduled for every day of the jubilee celebration from the first day on July 16th through Sunday the 23rd. The Water Carnival attracted 30,000 spectators to the four-hour saltwater spectacle that include boat races, an air show by Tex Rankin and his star flyers, and exhibitions of diving, water skiing, life saving techniques, and birling. Birling, the art and science of log rolling, was popular in the logging regions of the Pacific Northwest. (TNT 7/17/1939 p.1)

Golden Jubilee Water Carnival at Point Defiance, Sea Scout races. The Scouts pull hard at their oars, trying to propel their boat to the winning position. The most exciting event at the Golden Jubilee Water Carnival, held July 16, 1939 at Point Defiance, was the tugboat race. Five tugs churned through the choppy water from Crab Point to the Pavilion, a course of 1 1/4 mile. Winner Peter Foss crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, belching black smoke and carrying Captain Drew Foss to victory. Other competitors were the second place Fearless, owned by Tacoma Tug & Barge Co., the Capt. O.G. Olson from Olson Tug & Barge, the Foss #12 and the Morning Star of Shelton. (T. An enormous crowd of 30,000 has turned out to watch the water races and entertainment at the Golden Jubilee Water Carnival, held July 16, 1939 at Point Defiance. They line every available inch of dock and window space at the Point Defiance Pavilion. Large yachts and smaller crafts have also docked to enjoy the show. This was the kick off event for Golden Jubilee, the celebration of Washington State's 50th anniversary of statehood.
