For 45 minutes, beginning around 4:15p.m. on March 23, 1943, eleven fire fighting companies plus civilians and members of the Coast Guard fought a 3 alarm fire at the C & S Foundry that threatened to spread to the surrounding Center St. industrial district. In the end, the foundry was destroyed, sustaining an estimated $15,000 in damages, and the Tacoma Millwork Supply Co. and the Anderson Fir Finish Co. were slightly damaged. (TNT 03-25-1943 p.1; T. On March 7, 1943, the members of the fraternal order of Eagles turned out in force at "Scrap Iron Acres," Pierce County's salvage depot near the Pacific Match Co. at 3223 So. Union. They were volunteering their time to help sort some of the 3,000 tons of salvage metal and load steel onto a railroad car for transport to a Seattle Steel mill. By the end of the day 65 tons of steel was on its way to be converted to tools of war. (T. Times 3/8/1943, pg. 1)

After one railroad car was filled with scrap steel on March 7, 1943, the volunteers from the Eagles pushed it to another location to wait for transport to a Seattle steel mill. Gambling House Raid, April 16, 1943 at the Good Luck Club. An interior view shows the open door at the top of the stairs with a hand-printed sign, "No Minors Allowed." The Good Luck Club was located on the second floor at 1347 Broadway, at the top of a flight of 26 steps. One first had to open an iron door leading to a vestibule. The customer stood there until identified by a look out behind a wire screen. After identification, the first door would be locked and a second door opened into the club proper. This interior view shows a large lottery table with several tickets or stubs on it, many of them attached to pointed stands in a spiral pattern. On February 7, 1943, thousands of citizens streamed in and out of Tacoma's four USO recreational centers celebrating the one year anniversary of the completion of two of those centers. At the center at 1221-23 Pacific Ave. (pictured), 4500 visitors were counted before organizers gave up on the count. Governor Arthur B. Langlie (seated right) has challenged Pvt. Owen Roach of Illinois to a game of checkers. Onlookers include, left to right, R.P. Banner, USN, Capt. Troutt, Mayor Harry P. Cain, Maj. Gen. Charles H. White, Mrs. Helen Purdie and Maj. Home portrait of Mrs. Charles (Phoebe) Lea, Jr. The portrait ran in the Tacoma Times announcing Mrs. Lea's election as president of the Tacoma Junior League. Her husband, Charles Lea Jr., was an architect with the local firm of Lea, Pearson & Richards. In 1942, the Lea family resided at 915 Park Dr. (T. Times 3/6/1943, pg. 4)

In February of 1943, the Tacoma Transit Co. parked one of its buses in front of the Modern Auto Works at 1401-09 A St. for a photo opportunity. The photo was used in a February 25 advertisement in the Tacoma Times asking people to use the rear door of the bus for exiting, leaving the front entrance for loading.. (T Times 2/25/43 Pg. 25)

McKinley Park May Queen. On May 18, 1943, a formally dressed young woman sits on a throne as May Queen, surrounded by the young women of her court. The girls pose in McKinley Park, 9000 Upper Park St. E on the eastside of Tacoma. McKinley Park was given as a gift to the city in 1901 by the Tacoma Land & Improvement Co. It was slowly developed, but by the 1940's, the eastside park was one of the recreation centers of the city. (T.Times) [Also dated 05-14-1943]

J.A. Mitchell, age 79, was a constable in the police court of Judge W. A. Richmond when this photograph was taken in March 1943. Mr. Mitchell served on the Tacoma police force from 1902 to 1914. After 17 years as both a police officer and constable, he took a job with the Tacoma school district as a custodian. Upon retiring, he ran for and was elected constable. (T. Times, 3/31/1943, p.1)

Four unidentified men have a good grasp on what appears to be a check. Richards Studio notes identify the picture as Munson Motors, Oldsmobile dealer. Munson Motors was located at 5622 South Tacoma Way from 1925- 1958, when the company was sold to Russ Dunmire.

Overview of new vocational training center at Clover Park High School. the $152,000 center was built with federal grants obtained by Superintendent A.G. Hudtloff and would be used for training skilled workers in the vital defense industries. Autos and busses surround the building as classes begin in February of 1943. Demand was so high for skilled workers, that classes ran around the clock.

Poultry on Garbage Dump. Man holds plucked turkey amid waste and debris. Although the reason for this photograph is unknown, reports of food waste at the City Dump were reported in by the War Food Committee in the newspaper in August of 1943. Many foods, including proteins, were rationed as the American homeland fought to feed its growing number of soldiers.

Installation of officers at Rudder Club. Posed against the flocked wallpaper of the Rudder Club are its new officers, installed February 23, 1943. The Rudder Club is believed to be a forerunner of the Propeller Club. It was a social club formed around August of 1942 and it catered primarily to shipyard employees. The Salishan housing development officially opened to its first ten families on May 1, 1943. The family of Ralph J. Yorges, who came to Tacoma from Palouse, was the first to move in. Mrs. Yorges is holding up a curtain next to the window that is being washed by her husband. Their 10-year-old daughter, Janice, holds a hammer for her mother, while her arm rests on Ralph, Jr's high chair. The Salishan housing development was started during the WWII to provide housing for Tacomans who were working in the defense industries. (T. Times 5/3/1943, pg. 1)

Brig. General Walter J. DeLong and his wife and daughter Norma at Camp Murray. Norma, a junior at Clover Park High School, was the couple's middle child. They also had two sons, Walter Jr., who attended Washington State College, and Clarence, a sixth grader at Clover Park School.

Guardsman Irven W. Kenney kissed his mother goodbye on June 18,1942 as he left for active duty with the Washington State Guard. Emotionally looking on was his father, Lieut. Col. I. W. Kenney, a member of the staff of Adjutant General Walter J. DeLong. Irven had volunteered to go on active duty and was being sent to the Olympic Peninsula with 29 other Guardsmen to man air raid warning posts. In August of 1942 Lieut. Col. Kenney died suddenly while stationed in Ogden, Utah. His son, Irven Kenney, Jr. survived the war and returned to Tacoma where he lived for the rest of his life, dying in July of 1992. (T.
