ca. 1924. One golfer is attempting to blast out of a bunker at the Fircrest Golf Course while his two companions remain safely out of the way. This photograph was believed to have been taken not long after the private golf course's opening in 1924. This site has been identified as the original hole design and bunker configuration of the 17th green at the Fircrest Golf Course. The course designer, Arthur V. Macan, created the hole to mirror the glaciers of Mount Rainier. Golfers soon called it "The Volcano Hole." (Additional information provided by a reader)

W.E. ("Bill") Dalgleish of Tacoma was one of the leaders after the first day of competition, June 19, 1925, at the 27th annual Pacific Northwest Golf Association open tournament held at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club links. Mr. Dalgleish was the head pro at the site of the event. He would eventually finish at 309 strokes for the tournament, 14 behind the winner, Seattle pro Jack Hueston. These men and their caddies enjoyed a round of golf at the Fircrest Golf Club in August of 1925. The private golf course had opened in July of 1924 with nine of the 18 holes available. The second nine holes were seeded in the fall of 1924 and would be ready for use by the summer of 1925. The course's rolling grounds would provide challenges for later tournaments. A group of men and women golfers gathered in front of the clubhouse at the new Highland Golf Course on the course's first day of play, June 20, 1931. The public course, located at North 13th and Pearl Streets, was so named because the land it occupied was some of the highest in the city; the clubhouse presented a commanding view from its verandas. The 18 hole course offered velvety greens and tricky fairways. Its well-equipped, modern clubhouse offered the accommodations of a private club - yet it was open to the public. 18 holes cost $0.50. This is how the Allenmore Golf Course clubhouse appeared in September of 1931 with the snow capped peaks of Mount Rainier in the background . The golf course had just opened with 18 holes in August of that year. Allenmore derived its name from the last names of owners Sam Allen and D.W. Dinsmore.

Ruth Canale, young links star, holding the perpetual trophy plaque of walnut and silver, offered by the Tacoma Times and inscribed with the names of the winners of the Washington State Women's Public Links Golf Tournament. An unidentified waitress served ten customers from behind the lunch counter in the Allenmore Golf Course Club House on July 12, 1939. The club house, designed by Nelson and Round, architects, was one of the most elaborate buildings of its kind in the Northwest when it was built in 1931. It had both men's and women's locker rooms and showers in the basement, and a club room, kitchen and lunch room on the first floor. On the second floor there were two bedrooms and a small apartment. The walls of the lunch room and club room were paneled with knotty West Coast Hemlock. (TDL 9/13/1931)

These caddies put in long days on the greens of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Lakewood during the 21st annual Northwest Lumbermen's Golf Tournament held in August of 1941. There were 115 individual entries and numerous match plays. Robert Studebaker of Shelton won the golf championship with a net 69 over Tacoman Corydon Wagner.
