  • In 1938 President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill that established Olympic National Park, giving greater protection to what had been established as Olympic National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. In 1940, an additional 187,411 acres were added to the 684, 000 acre area, including sections of the Elwah River watershed and Hurricane Ridge. Subsequent additions to the park now make the total area over 922,000 acres. The area is known for spectacular views and beautiful alpine wildflowers. circa 1970.
