- This spectacular lake, sixty miles long, occupies a U shaped valley which extends northwest to southeast through Chelan County. One of Washington's scenic wonderlands, this glacier formed body of water has a maximum depth of 1,419 feet which is 340 ft. below sea level. Chelan is the modification of an Indian word meaning "deep water."The community of Chelan is at the south end of Lake Chelan west of the Columbia River in east central Chelan County. Chelan was incorporated May 7, 1902. circa 1910.
