Scope and content
- View of the soldiers' barracks, officers' housing, and parade grounds of Fort Flagler prior to or during World War I. A small group of soldiers is standing on the steps of a building at left, and gun carriages are lined up on the grounds at right. Fort Flagler- located on Marrowstone Island in Washington State- was built in 1899 as part of a strategic defense system guarding Puget Sound and the shipyards in Bremerton. During both World Wars and the Korean conflict, the fort was used as training grounds for soldiers. Most of the original buildings were torn down in 1936 after succumbing to wood rot. Deactivated in 1953, Fort Flagler was sold to the Washington State Parks Department, and is now maintained as a park and convention center.
