Scope and content

  • View of Fort Worden on a bluff overlooking Admiralty Bay, with the lighthouse visible below at far right. Fort Worden was built as part of a strategic defense system to protect Puget Sound and the shipyards, and was activated in 1902. During both World Wars and the Korean Conflict, the fort was used as a training ground for various military personnel until being decommissioned in 1953. The site served as a state juvenile detention facility through 1971, when it was acquired by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Department. It is now maintained as a park and convention center.
  • Printed on front: Point Wilson, Washington, near Port Townsend
