One of the most anticipated social events for the younger set in 1938 was the "Club of Hearts" yearly formal ball held in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on December 26, 1938. Helen Feek, Lorraine Ronquist, Sheryl Nyman, and Marcelle Patrick smilingly glance back over their shoulders to have their picture taken. Trophies presented to Knight Templar organizations after the afternoon parade held in conjunction with the 51st Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. Three men in dress uniform hold trophies for 1938 classes A, B, and C.

Herds of Moose have descended on Tacoma for their 23rd Annual Northwest Moose Association Convention. One of the highlights of the three day affair is the Loyal Order of Moose Convention Parade. Photograph shows men in uniform marching in front of Safeway's Bay City Market and Hotel Ridpath on Pacific Avenue. All local bands, drum corps and drill teams were invited to join at the parade's formation at 7th & Pacific. Over 1000 responded and marched in the parade. (T. Shriners convention, the Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee. The men pose in front of the Winthrop Hotel dressed in raincoats and wearing either 10 gallon hats or Russian appearing hats. A few appear tied up in ropes. Shriners from around the state assembled in Tacoma to board a special sixteen car train bound for the Golden Jubilee to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Parades, events and stunts would be held in Memorial Stadium in conjunction with the convention. Over 100,000 were expected to attend. (T. Times 6/3/1838, pg. 2)

Members of a Washington Afifi Shrine Temple practice their skit for the Golden Jubilee convention to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Behind the scenes gathering of eight men in locker room, some in costume. Shriners from all over the state gathered to Tacoma to travel in a special 16 car train to the convention. It was estimated that over 100,000 people would be attending.

Shriners from around the state assembled in Tacoma and departed by a special train for the Golden Jubilee Imperial Council Session in Los Angeles June 6-9, 1938. Over 100,000 fraternal brothers were expected to attend the sessions in LA.

In June of 1938, the Shriners descend on Tacoma before leaving for their Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee,1888-1938, in Los Angeles. Shriners from Southwest and Central Washington, as well as Yakima, Wenatchee and Grays Harbor have gathered in Tacoma to board a special 16 car train to LA. The Shriners parade heads north on the 900 block of Broadway over streetcar tracks embedded in the pavement. The trolley car appears to be operating during the parade. (T. Times 6/3/1938, pg. 2)

College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance, held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. The Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop was the site of the November 25, 1938, College of Puget Sound Sigma Mu Chi fraternity and Kappa Sigma Theta sorority formal dance. One couple sitting on edge of table catch-up on events with another couple who is just arriving. Streamline formals seem to have been popular that year as well as marcelled hairdos. (T. A quartet of party goers relaxes during the intermission at the Spinster Club "Bowery" dance, held February 25, 1938 at the Century Ballroom. Seated left to right in the booth are Donald Baker, Geraldine Elsbree, Classina Buffelen, and Vivian Sturtridge. This mule-drawn buckboard carried a costumed band of Rainbow Girls down the streetcar tracks of Broadway during the Rainbow Girls Parade of July 13, 1939. Tacoma was the site of the 13th annual Grand Assembly drawing nearly 1,200 representatives. The Winthrop Hotel is in the background. See D8573, image 5, for a more general view of this parade entry.

On June 9, 1939, the unidentified University-Union Club doorman opened the automobile door for E. F. Cardin, Jr. and Lorain Cousins, in formal attire, to enter the Club under the canvas-covered awning. The doorman's elegant white uniform added glamour to the evening event, attended by 500 guests, celebrating the clubs' merger. By 1938, the Union Club had been located in the elegant building at 539 Broadway for 50 years. In 1939, a decision was reached by the Union Club and the University Club to merge into one, the University-Union Club, at this location. The membership for the joint club was full at 450 members. On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Mr. Reagan was 35 at the time of this picture and lived with his wife and family at 5020 6th Ave. (T.Times 8/10/1939 p.1)

The small sons of Emory Reagan Sr. take a break from helping Dad paint the flagpole at the University Union Club. Emory Jr., 11, holds on to the rope that sends supplies up to Dad, eliminating the need for him to go up and down the pole repeatedly. Duane, 8, holds a paintbrush and Mickey, the family's two month old terrier. The senior Mr. Reagan remained aloft on the flagpole for 5 1/2 hours completing his paint job.
