The Commerce Street Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. A young girl with her puppy, tagged number 73, receives a Tacoma policeman's admiration. Another girl holds her sleeping puppy and does not seem to approve of the attention. Fairyland and Christmas parade for children, the day after Thanksgiving, November 29, 1935. Four clowns ride on a float with the sign " Merry Christmas, Happy New Year." This is possibly the "mechanical clown" float referred to in the news stories. Crowd of spectators stand at 9th and Broadway watching the float pass by. Governor's Review of National Guard at Fort Lewis. Large crowd of spectators gathered on a hill to observe the largest military review up to that time. Flag bearers followed by military unit on parade grounds. Governors from Washington, Oregon and Montana were present to watch 14,000 regular army and national guard troops pass in formal review. This is possibly the 161st regiment, Washington National Guard, from the 81st Infantry Brigade. (T. Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

On August 29, 1936, Bremerton's Assistant Fire Chief Ernest Yett, left, and Fire Chief S.B. "Skippy" Lent posed with four unidentified girls and their favorite dolls prior to the Bremerton Pet Parade. Over 264 youngsters marched in the parade sponsored by the Retail Merchant's Association. They carried dolls, wore costumes or were accompanied by their pets. Fire Chief Lent would retire in 1936, after 26 years of service with the department; 11 as a volunteer and 16 years as Fire Chief. Assistant Chief Lett was the only man in the city eligible to test for the vacant Chief position. (Bremerton Sun 8/31/1936, pg. 1; 12/12/1936, pg.1 - Lent retirement).
Bremerton's children's pet parade, held August 29, 1936. Several children holding dolls and pushing doll carriages walk in the parade past the Shell service station and Parker Lumber Co. This group of elaborately costumed Tacomans took part in the annual Toyland Parade on the morning of November 27, 1936 through the streets of downtown Tacoma. The first float in the parade carried Santa Claus in a giant sled pulled by 2 white reindeer. The Toyland Parade was the official opening for the Christmas shopping season. (T. Times 11-28-1936 p.11)
In one of its oddest parade turns, the Tacoma Safety Council presented the "Horror Parade," also called the Tacoma Safety Council Safety Show parade. The parade was intended to serve as a tragic reminder for reckless and careless drivers. The first prize winner was this wrecked automobile in tow with a dummy laying across seat. The sign says "Oh Why ! Didn't I Get My Brakes Repaired Yesterday?" Children on bicycles watch the macabre parade which traversed the main streets of Tacoma for two hours. (T. Times 2/26/1937, pg. 1)

The Tacoma Safety Council Safety Show Parade, also called the "Horror Parade." The parade visually showed the effects of careless and reckless driving to the citizens of Tacoma. Fairyland and Christmas parade for children, November 29, 1935. Marching band at corner of 9th and Broadway. This large band is unidentified, it is one of three in the parade. The bands hailed from the Musicians' Union, Stadium and Lincoln High Schools. The Bostwick Block can be seen at the right, the Bostwick Hotel on the upper floors with the "Credit Dentist" Walter Whetstone below. On April 18, 1936, Daffodil Queen Helen Edgerton poses in the doorway of the 35 foot daffodil "tower" that served as a reviewing stand for the Daffodil Parade. The pylon was covered with 200,000 daffodils and was located at the corner of 10th and Pacific. Members of her court stand in front. Tacoma City Light's entry in the 1941 Daffodil Parade was a floral model of the Cushman Power Plant generator. The float, designed by Bill Knabel, was the winner of the Garrett trophy in the civic division. The crowd for the parade was estimated at 100,000. (T. Times 3/29/1941, pg. 1)

On October 30, 1941, one of the largest crowds to ever see a parade in Tacoma gathered to match a six mile long parade of military might. Pictured is a birds eye view of some of the 3rd Infantry Division of Fort Lewis marching in mass formation.
Soldiers massed together in a variety of vehicles at either the end or beginning of the October 30, 1941 Army Parade. The participants are dressed in uniform including steel helmets.
Every man and vehicle in the U.S. Army's 3rd Division, stationed at Fort Lewis, was on display during the military parade held on October 30th, 1941 in downtown Tacoma. As paper, confetti and streamers rained down, the soldiers and their machines made their way toward the reviewing stand set up at South 12th Street and Pacific. Commercial and academic Tacoma were "closed" for the parade. Most stores shut their doors until after the procession and Tacoma's schools declared a special all-day "holiday". Immediately after the parade, Tacoma's merchants threw open their doors and began the 10th Annual "United Tacoma Sale", sponsored by 50 downtown retailers. (T.Times 10/30/1941 p.1)
