California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, and his family, with former Governor Arthur Langlie, and his family, and two drum majorettes, on platform during rally at Tacoma Armory. Governor Warren was met by an enthusiastic audience of over 5000 on October 14, 1948. He was introduced by Arthur Langlie, former governor who was running for election. 285 carload pile of phosphate at Port Piers to be shipped, Times, Corky Maybin. A huge stockpile of phosphate had been growing on Port of Tacoma property from 285 carloads of the material delivered from Idaho pending shipment to Japan. Tacoma had no bunker facilities at the time and ships scheduled to take the load were not yet in port. It required continuous day and night work of several power shovels to handle the stockpile. A man is shown giving directions to the crane operator for dumping the phosphate. Birchfield Boiler's facilities are seen in the background. (T.Times, 9/21/1948, p.1)

Richards' Building. Known as 734-36 Pacific Avenue on the Pacific Avenue side of the building and 735 Commerce Street on the upper side of the building which housed the Rudder Club in 1948. The surface of the lower story is highly reflective surrounding corrugated metal. A neon sign hangs over the doorway. The upper level of the building has arched windows and an ornamented cornice.

An aerial photograph featuring Shaffer Terminals, Inc., located on the Waterfront at the foot of Division Avenue. Shaffer Terminals also had another location, Dock No. 2 along the Milwaukee Waterway. Stadium High School and Stadium Bowl are located on the right hand side and looking along City Waterway the 11th Street bridge and be seen and the taller buildings of the business and commercial center of Tacoma in the upper center of the photograph.

Wives of barbershop quartets, Barbershop Quartet, Leo Barton. Thirteen women pose on the steps of a building wearing suits, overcoats, hats, gloves and carrying their handbags. Their spouses may have been part of the second annual parade of quartets that would perform at Jason Lee School on October 23, 1948. 15 groups from the Pacific Northwest were entered in the event. Photograph ordered by Charles F.A. Mann. The "Virginia R" slid down the ways at Tacoma Boat Building Company October 2, 1948. She was completed January 29, 1949. A 108 foot tuna clipper, she was built for Captain Manuel Ribiero and Associates of San Diego. She was 108' x 26' x 13.6', had a 16 cylinder General Motors diesel engine and would carry up to 250 tons of frozen tuna. The cost was reported at $200,000. She was the 10th tuna clipper produced so far in 1948 at Tacoma Boat which had also repaired 73 craft of various kinds during the same time period. (TNT, 10/3/1948, p.C-11) TPL-8978

October 2, 1948, was opening day of the first Thom McAn Shoe Store in Washington, the second in the Pacific Northwest after Portland where Thom McAn opened a store a month earlier. Tacoma's Thom McAn's was at 958 Pacific Ave. in the Rust Building. Since it was built in 1920 the Rust Building has been home to many businesses including Lundquist-Lilly Clothing, Bruno Photographic Studio, Kress Malted Milk, and KVI Radio. (TNT, 10/7/1948, p.27)

Henry A. Wallace, center, the candidate for President of the United States in 1948 from the Progressive Party spoke on October 9th, 1948 at the Tacoma Armory. In his speech he attacked the Taft-Hartley Act and the "hot war" being waged against labor unions. While in Tacoma, he met with a group of local Progressive Party candidates including: (l to r) John Green Jr., Vera Keating, Russell H. Fluent, Henry Wallace, Rodney Peterson, Ernest T. Dorothy Ann Schneider-Glastetter. Dorothy Ann Schneider and Herman Bernard Glastetter were married September 18, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic church. Father McGreil performed the ceremony before 200 guests. Dorothy is shown wearing her wedding gown of ivory satin with a round neckline and tight girdle of crystal beads and pearls. The skirt flowed into a long train. She wears a finger tip veil of illusion caught with a tiara of pearls and is holding her bouquet of stepanotis and orchids. (T.Times, 9/18/1948, p.10)

Associated Oil Service Stations. Eldred J. Omundson and Paul L. Crosby operated the Associated station at 3102 South 12th Street. The station features the "Flying A" neon sign over its distinctive concentric rings on top of the station. The station featured Aero batteries and Federal tires. A sign affixed to a light pole in the parking area reminds customers of the Community Chest drive. The lot is fenced and two automobiles are parked near the station. TPL-1886

Fair booth, windows and overall, Carstens Packing Company, Mr. White. Carstens Tacoma location was 1623 East J Street. This window display shows meat hung in the back and how to cook meat using different methods along the front. From left to right, the meats are lamb, veal, beef rib, beef, pork exterior and pork interior. The cuts of meat shown on the raised tray in the middle are "party cuts" for special occasions.

Several shots of concrete blocks, Holroyd Company, Jim Holroyd. Men are building a wall near the water's edge using cement blocks. They are working from scaffolding and they have their building materials stacked on a second set of scaffolding behind them. A wheelbarrow has been used to mix cement below the work area and piles of cement sit on boards near the workers ready to lay another row of cement clocks.

Building front, Mondau's Tug Boat Tavern, Louie Mondau. Located in one of the brick buildings along Pacific Avenue, this view of Mondau's Tug Boat Restaurant and Tavern shows the entrance to the restaurant and on the left, the entrance to the James Hotel, above. Neon signs outline the letters and the tug boat that are part of the restaurant's sign, connected to their marquee. Louie Mondau was the owner of the restaurant and tavern. Warwick's Saloon had been at this location from 1893 until 1916.

Telephone Company Garage, Pacific T&T, Mr. A. Hill. Shelves contain some of the equipment needed to install new telephones and a bin sits next to a workbench labled for empty telephone set cartons. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph advertised that they had been putting in telephones almost three times as fast as ever before in the west and was serving an all time high number of phones. Two exterior views of Provident Building, W.H. Opie & Company. The six-story brick building was built in 1903. Other tenants in the building were Ghilarducci's California Florists, the U.S. Veterans Rehabilitation Council, the Boy Scouts, Federal Finance, Fox Studio Photographers as well as tailors, reweavers, dentists, lawyers, a music teacher, a health clinic, insurance agents, real estate agents and an employment service. Automobiles are parked in front along Pacific Avenue.

Two exterior views of Provident Building, W.H. Opie & Company, taken on October 8, 1948. The six-story brick building was built in 1903. George W. Bullard was the architect. Looking south along Pacific Avenue brings the Washington Building into view. City Cigar's neon sign is seen in the bottom right. The building was renamed the Securitiy Building ca. 1952. In addition to the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company the building served as store fronts for Savon Drugs and the Federal Finance Company. A sign for the Republican Party stretched across Pacific Avenue and admonished voters to vote for Dewey and Langlie. TPL-8637

The Equitable Building, later known as the Commonwealth Building, was completed in 1948. It was a completely modern office building, twelve stories high, built in the International style, but was called "distinctly American". On December 30, 1948, the Elks Temple at 565 Broadway opened its doors to members, wives and ladies to see the newly renovated building. The club room, very popular with the majority of the membership, was just one of the rooms that was completely redone. Everything - chairs, tables, floor coverings, light fixtures - was new and modernized. Even the billiard tables were completely overhauled. All the funiture was custom made in Tacoma. Olga Maijala (later Massie), a Griffin Fuel Company office worker, is busy filing customer account information into a new lockable file cabinet in December of 1948. The cabinet was purchased from the local distributer of cabinets and safes manufactured by Diebold, Incorporated. In the pre-computer, pre-"paperless" age roll-top cabinets like this were used to keep accounts in order and under lock and key. Besides the main lock on the rolling top, each separate drawer had its own lock. Griffin Fuel was a major local fuel delivery company in business since 1889. Photo ordered by Diebold, Inc. George G. Franklin was the owner of Franklin Food Stores, a Tacoma grocery and meat store. Franklin Food Stores had five locations located throughout Tacoma. George G. was married to Alice S. Superior Service Laundry first opened for business by offering a public inspection on April 9, 1927, they were one of the finest laundries in the country. The company offered complete laundry and dry cleaning services. The company advertised they were the most complete service and reasonably priced in this area.
