Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. The Stadium High School Girls Club was having an "Easter Parade of Fashions" show in March of 1947. Club members would model the latest "Sweet Sixteen" and spring fashions. A true "Easter Parade" of fashions was on display at the afternoon tea and fashion show sponsored by the Girls Club of Stadium High School and the P.T.A. in March of 1947. Many of Tacoma's leading shops, including Rhodes Bros., Fisher's, Lyons and Benders, furnished dresses and accessories for the fund raising event. In this photo, taken in front of Stadium H. During the summer of 1946, while Tacoma's school age children were on vacation, a group of police candidates were taking classes at Stadium High School. At the end of August, 37 of the candidates received diplomas and were declared full-fledged members of the Tacoma Police Department. Attending the graduation were a number of veterans of the Tacoma and Seattle police departments including: Police Captain A.E. Farrar, third from the left in the front row; Police Chief P.G. Gregg, in a dark suit and white hat; Safety Commissioner R.S. Temme, in light colored suit and "skimmer"; and Seattle Police Captain Emile Vallet, next to Temme. Stadium High School was built in 1891, it was built in the French Chateau style and originally designed by architect A. B. Hewitt, architect Frederick Heath remodeled the building and changed it into the school. Stadium Bowl was built in 1909, it has been remodeled many times because of mudslides and weather damage. Bill Herdman, gardener at Stadium High School, with beautiful bouquet of flowers including dahlias in a photograph dated September 27, 1948. Mr. Herdman was wearing his signature outfit of "newsboy" cap, vest, tie, rolled-up sleeves and trousers. An article about Mr. Herdman in the Tacoma Daily Ledger's October 11, 1931 edition, 17 years before, also showed Mr. Herdman in similar clothing. William (Bill) Herdman was an Englishman who learned his gardening craft on English estates and also in gardens near Newscastle. He came to Tacoma about 1910 and had been the official gardener for the Tacoma school system since 1913. He first started at Lincoln High School and then Stadium High with six intermediate schools in between. Mr. Herdman was also responsible for the district's playfields, baseball diamonds and football gridirons. A bachelor, he lived in the caretaker's home in back of Stadium High since he began working for the schools. Dahlias and gladiolas were his favorite blooms. Girls with Red Feather for the Tacoma Community Chest at Stadium High School. Left to right, Patty Doe, Margaret Hansen and Lorraine Bottinger are holding up the Tacoma Community Chest red feather as a symbol of victory. The Chest drive has proven to be a great success, with the quota of $340,000 having been reached and exceeded by $171.09. This is the first time in 12 peace time years the Chest has met its quota (T. Women representing several auxiliaries of Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations posed on the steps of Stadium High School on April 24, 1940. Among the nine women was Mrs. Leon Cecil of Puyallup, senior vice-president of the Department of Washington auxiliaries, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She is second to the right, first row. Mrs. Cecil was at Stadium to award two students, Perry Burkhart and Dave Glenn, who had captured first and second place essay honors among Tacoma students and would be eligible for honors in the statewide essay contest sponsored by the auxiliaries of the V.F.W. In March of 1940, Stadium High School presented their 28th annual opera "Desert Song." The 200 students in the cast rehearsed three months to perform the light opera March 28-30. The lead was played by Donna Mae Jaden, who later achieved fame as musical and film star Janis Paige. Stadium High School's State Champion tennis team of 1942 poses in front of the school. The team won both the state tournament and the Cross State League titles in '42. The student body of Stadium High School assembled in front of their school as a squad of R.O.T.C. cadets from Bellarmine High School fired three volleys with their rifles at the Memorial Day service held in May of 1941. During the solemn ceremony, special tribute was paid to the 11 Stadium alumni who lost their lives in WWI. (T. Times 5/30/1941 p.1)

ca. 1963. Stadium High School on Stadium Way enjoyed elevated views of Commencement Bay. This 1963 aerial photograph shows the school's proximity to the Washington State Historical Society Building juxtaposed with massive Stadium Bowl, site of football and civic endeavors. Stadium High School had been planned as a grand Tacoma hotel but it was gutted by fire before completion. It opened as a high school in 1906 and changed its name to Stadium in 1913. The school will be undergoing extensive remodeling starting in 2004 and its students transferred to the old Mount Tacoma High School.

Girls at Stadium High School are busy during the morning home economics class conducted by Vella Boyles at Stadium High School on April 17, 1969. The brightly lit room was well equipped with many Elna sewing machines, enough so that each student present had a machine to herself. In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)

In March of 1926, Stadium High School initiated its own branch of the national "Longfellows" Club. Members had to measure in at over six feet in height to join.
