The Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard sponsors the first horse show of the season on November 29, 1937 at the Armory. Two soldiers watch a white horse perform a trick with a very young rider on the horse's back. Tacoma's famous Cavalry unit was known locally as "Troop B." As part of the annual Army-Navy parade this battalion of Marines marched north on Pacific Avenue at 10th Street on Thursday morning, July 30, 1936. Thousands of spectators lined the sidewalks beneath the rows of flags that adorned the downtown streets. For the parade, in honor of Fleet Week, military personnel and motorized equipment were provided by Fort Lewis, as well as the Navy and Marines from nine visiting cruisers at anchor in Commencement Bay. Marching bands came both from Fort Lewis and the flagships. Some 2,000 men thrilled the crowds as an example of the nation's military might. (T. Thousands of spectators lined Broadway when over 4,000 soldiers, sailors and marines staged a military parade on Saturday July 24, 1937 as part of the annual Fleet Week program in Tacoma. Some 2,000 soldiers from Ft. Lewis joined 2,200 enlisted men and officers from the six battleships resting at anchor in Commencement Bay. Also taking part in the parade were a battalion of marines from the U.S.S. Oklahoma, and the combined bands of the Oklahoma, the U.S.S. West Virginia and the 10th Field Artillery Band from Ft. Lewis. The parade started at South 15th and Pacific. Marching north, they took So. 9th up to Broadway, and then marched south to So. 17th Street. Army-Navy Game at Stadium Bowl. Flag bearers march in front of the officials stand where Rear Admiral T.T. Craven, Maj. Gen. David L. Stone, Mayor George A. Smitley, and others give honorary salutes. A large unit of soldiers stand at attention on the sidelines. A 21-gun salute fired from the 75 mm guns of Fort Lewis opened the military pageant which preceded the second annual football contest between the two Armed Forces branches. On August 29, 1936, the sub teen crowd in Bremerton turned out to participate in the Pet Parade, sponsored by the Retail Merchant's Association. One of the most unusual pets was the pet goat held by Hazel Vosgien, left. Donna Dorene Ames, wearing a hunter's vest with shotgun shells and holding a toy rifle in emulation of the female sharpshooter Annie Oakley, posed with her Irish Setter dog. Youngsters brought favorite dolls, stuffed animals and pets to a children's parade, sponsored by the Retail Merchants' Association, in downtown Bremerton on August 29, 1936. Tired of waiting for the official Daffodil Parade, these kids from the Buckingham Apartments,1001 No. Yakima Ave., decided to stage their own parade on April 8th, 1937. Using dandelions to pinch hit for daffodils, the kids, fully costumed and made up, carried a sign stating "See the Daffodil Parade on Saturday." The 1936 Christmas Toyland Parade kicked off in a genuine Puget Sound fog that almost demanded street lights. The Old Lady who lived in a shoe is almost obscured by the dense fog. This float is one of ten elaborate floats inhabited by Mother Goose characters. The parade also included 3 bands- Stadium High School, Lincoln HS and a union band. More that 75 fantastically costumed mannequins with large paper mache heads marched along with the parade. (T. Times 11/28/1936, pg. 11)

The 1936 Toyland Parade, the second annual parade held the day after Thanksgiving, kicks off in a pea soup Puget Sound fog. Pictured are some of the 75 costumed characters that march along with the parade. These clowns hold a sign stating "clowns from Toyland." The 1936 parade is 1/3 larger than the previous year and attended by thousands of anxious school children and their parents, awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. (T. Times 11/28/1936, pg. 11)

The Tacoma merchants on Broadway and Pacific Avenues sponsored the second annual Fairyland and Christmas Parade for Children which was held on the day after Thanksgiving, 1935. The first float in the parade carried Santa in a well packed sleigh pulled by two snow white reindeer. Starting near the Elks Temple at 565 South Broadway, the parade traveled down Broadway, turned east at South 13th Street and then proceeded north on Pacific. 1937 Daffodil Parade. Flag bearers from the Wild West Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars lead the way for the parade down Ninth Street to Pacific Avenue. They are followed by a marching band and a horseback unit. The bands represented in the 1937 parade were the Musicians Union, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) band, Lincoln High School and Stadium High School. Thousands of Roosevelt supporters paraded at night through the streets of downtown Tacoma preceding the Democratic Rally at the Coliseum on October 24, 1936. The crowd waved American flags and carried signs indicating support for Roosevelt from the Timber Workers and Longshoremen. The parade started at Union Station and ended at the Coliseum, 407 South 13th St., where the group cheered speeches by U.S. Senator Lewis B. Schwellenbach and local Democrats. Prominent in the background of this photograph is the Greenwich Coliseum, 407 So. 13th St., built in 1926 and demolished in 1975. In the thirties, it was an arena and ballroom with wrestling on Monday, boxing on Thursday and dancing on Friday and Saturday. In 1940, the structure became the Coliseum Bowling Palace and hosted decades of bowlers until it closed in 1972. (T. Times 10/26/1936, pg. 1)

Policemen's Ball at Century Ballroom on December 17, 1937. Police color guard from the TPD leads into the ballroom a group including Mayor and Mrs.George Smitley, Safety (Police) Commissioner Frank Callender and Public Works Commissioner Abner Bergersen. Ranking police officials and their wives completed the group. This benefit ball was claimed to be the most successful ball given by Tacoma policemen. Several other city councilmen were in attendance at this winter gala including Safety (Police) Commissioner Frank Callender and Public Works Commissioner Abner Bergersen. Others included in the procession were high ranking police officials and their wives. Kenworthy banquet for employees. Thomas W. Neilson, 35-year employee of Kenworthy Grain & Milling Co., was the honored guest at an informal banquet for company employees held in the Army-Navy Room of the Winthrop Hotel on May 23, 1936. Mr. Neilson, warehouse foreman, had plans to retire. Others in attendance included the branch managers throughout the state that represented the 43-year-old Tacoma business. Maxine Mayhew holds a Bantam rooster at the 34th Annual Tacoma Poultry Show held in the old Mohr Building, 1141 Broadway, on December 28-31, 1937. Maxine smiles at the small rooster, who appears to be having a "bad hair day." After the show, the traditional poultrymen's banquet, a home-cooked chicken dinner, was held on Saturday, January 1st in the Odd Fellows Hall, 6th and Fawcett.(T.
