Rotary Club Scotsmen at the Union Club. James Gifford Newbegin, who would be appointed mayor in 1929 upon the resignation of Melvin G. Tennent, is at extreme right in this April 26, 1928, photograph. With the exception of one properly dressed Scotsman third to the right, the other Rotary Club members have patched together costumes consisting of tablecloth "kilts," wisk brooms in place of sporrans, and vacuum cleaner hoses and bags in lieu of bagpipes.
