View of the Carnegie Library in Spokane, WA. Built in 1904, the Carnegie Library, Main Branch, was the first true library structure in the city, occupying an entire block at the east end of Browne’s Addition. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie funded construction of the building, and acclaimed Spokane architectural firm Preusse and Zittel designed it. The building is an excellent example of neo-classical styling, exhibiting several unique and well-preserved features. The Main Branch is listed on the National Register of Historic places as part of a multiple-property nomination that includes all of the Carnegie Libraries in Washington state.

Opened January 1988 in Cooper Park, the Gothic-style building was made out of Dayton limestone with Marquette red sandstone trimmings, and was “rated as the largest and best building in the state of Ohio devoted exclusively to library purposes,â€according to the Dayton Metro Library narrative.

The Dallas Public Library was designed by noted architect George Dahl as the replacement for the 1901 Carnegie Library located on the same site. The library opened in September 1955 and it contained 120,000 square feet (11,000 m2) on 4 above ground levels and 2 below ground levels, with provisions for 2 additional floors in the future. The auditorium in the second basement seated 250 people and a terrace allowed for a rooftop garden.

Message: Seattle, Washington, July 21. We arrived here yesterday. Portland was too hot. Had a boat ride on Lake Washington to-day. It is larger than Clear Lake, but looks like it some, has big wooded islands in it and lots of fish. I like it here very much, it is so like San Francisco. We are quite well. Harriet.
