The Tacoma County and Golf Club held a Halloween party for the children of the members in October of 1951. This unidentifiable young lady, posed at the foot of the club house staircase, came dressed as a dancing cigarette pack. Old Gold's dancing cigarette packs first appeared on television in the late 1940s. By 1951 they were so well known and popular with the public that they were "TV stars" even though the dancers inside the boxes were faceless and "bodyless". (TNT 11/4/1951 p. D-1)

Tacoma Country and Golf Club was located on 12750 Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest, along the shore of American Lake. The club dates back to about 1894, with the club facilities relocated in 1904 to its present location, which was formerly the R. B. Lehman farm. The country club was starting their annual week for juniors, with sailboat races as the first event. Juniors would be participating in tennis, golf, swimming, picnics and dances. Tacoma was hosting the 25th Annual Northwest Lumbermen's Golf Tournament at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Paul Johns was Chairman of the big event, 150 lumbermen participated in the tournament. The golf course at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. The sky seems striped with clouds as several golfers try out their skills on the green. In 1894, golf was introduced to Tacoma by a small group of displaced Scotsmen who negotiated to lease 280 acres of prairie land in Edison (now South Tacoma.) By 1904, the club made plans to relocate and the R.B. Lehman farm on the eastern shore of American Lake was purchased. This purchase, along with some adjacent property, gave the club 237 acres to stretch out on. This became the first permanent home of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, the oldest continuing country club west of the Mississippi. ("A History of Pierce County, Wa." vol. 1)

This photograph shows the clubhouse of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on American Lake as it looked from the lake side of the building in September of 1956. It was built in 1910 from plans by the architects Russell and Babcock to replace the original clubhouse which was destroyed by fire. By 1956, it was known as "The Grand Old Lady". Its most prominent feature was a spiral staircase in the entry hall, which appears in many wedding and party pictures of the time. A fire gutted the structure in 1961. This regal building, known as the "Grand Old Lady," rose in its place. It was best remembered for its gracious spiral staircase in the entrance hall, shown in many wedding portraits. The Ida Baille Guild, Tacoma Orthopedic Association, staged a style show and Easter Parade for 100 members who attended the guild luncheon March 22, 1948, at the Country Club. Mrs. John Seward of Helene's Inc. was the stylist. The women posed on the staircase in an assortment of Easter bonnets (styled by Lee Durrell), dresses and suits. Tacoma Country and Golf Club was hosting one of the largest and most beautiful events of the year on June 10, 1948. The annual Ladies Day luncheon had more than 150 women attend; the club rooms were decorated with lovely June flowers. Left to right are some of the ladies who attended the event: Ethel M. Sorority colors of wine and silver blue decorated the Tacoma Country and Golf Club for the College of Puget Sound's Phi Beta Phi formal dinner dance. Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Tacoma Country Club. One of a pair of unidentified female golfers takes a swing while the teenage caddie looks on. The country club purchased the R.B. Lehman farm on the eastern shore of American Lake in 1904. The final price for a total of 287 acres was $7,000. (Country Club One Hundred Years almanac)

The party's over, and Father-of-the-Bride Reno Odlin was left to contend with all of the empty champagne bottles after his daughter's wedding reception at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on August 20, 1948. Mr. Odlin was the President of Puget Sound National Bank of Tacoma. His daughter Mary Lee Odlin and William Philip were married at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Tacoma. (T.N.T., 8/29/48, p. D-1).
