Tacoma Sculpturing Club has helped many homemakers become interested in wood carving as a hobby. The club meets regularly in the Bryant Creative Art Center at Bryant School. During World War II the club members volunteered with the Red Cross arts and crafts unit. The club is showing their work at the Washington State Historical Society museum, formerly known as the Ferry Museum (T.N.T., 5/1/49, p. D-5 & 5/8/49, p. A-13).

Anderson, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks National Organization, is presented a commeratative newspaper during a visit to Tacoma in October of 1949. Various Masonic chapters met on August 5, 1950, in a Tenino sandstone quarry for ceremonies conferring the Mark Master degree. Members from Washington and Oregon gathered for the event sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44 of the Royal Arch Masons. This view taken from the rear shows the massiveness of the quarry walls contrasted with the size of the men before them. Sandstone from this Tenino quarry was used in construction of the old state capitol in Olympia. (TNT 8-1-50, p. 26)

A large contingent of Royal Arch Masons gathered at the sandstone quarry in Tenino for Masonic ceremonies on August 5, 1950. The men are posed in front of the massive quarry walls. Masonic chapters from Washington and Oregon attended the members-only event which was sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44. A block of Tenino stone can be found in the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. (TNT 8-1-50, p. 26)

Members of the Tacoma chapter, Washington Association for Retarded Children attach a "Help Mentally Retarded Children" nametag on Emmett Anderson of Anderson Printing Co. on November 11, 1954. November 14-23 was designated as National Retarded Children's Week and it is possible that Anderson Printing was responsible for printing the brochures and posters. The Tacoma chapter was sponsoring the eighth annual carnival in support of the Washington Association for Retarded Children to be held on November 20th at the Laborer's Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dyer and Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Burford were co-chairmen. Funds raised at the carnival would be used for holiday treats and birthday parties for the Rainier State School children, many of them orphans who would not be able to enjoy such entertainment without the Association's support. Elks; ritualistic team on stage. The Tacoma Elks Lodge Ritualistic team won top honors at the state contest in Pasco in 1955. They would be competing at the national convention in July in Philadelphia. The trophy is for Washington State Elks Association championship ritualistic team (for 1949-1950, not yet engraved for the current year.) Team members wear tuxedos with ornamental neckpieces. Team members were as follows (listed in no particular order) : A.J. Emery, Exalted Ruler, W.E. Bysegger, leading knight, Norbert Grove, loyal knight, Swan Johnson, lecturing knight, Dr. Ray Magnusson, esquire, Frank F. Smith, inner guard, and Wesley Holmberg, chaplain. E.O. Clinton S. Reynolds (left), new president of Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, presents outgoing president Charles M. Fogg (center) with a framed check for $1.00, his salary for his tenure as 1954 Chamber President. Looking on at the right is Tom Collins, Kansas City banker and humorist and featured speaker for the event. The presentation was the highlight of the 70th annual Chamber dinner in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. A standing room only crowd of 435 attended the event. (TNT 1/20/1955, pg. 1 & A-5)

1955 American Red Cross annual meeting. Dr. Charles G. Trimble is receiving an award from Gordon E. Tatum commemorating his 30 years of selfless volunteer service with the Tacoma-Pierce County chapter of the American Red Cross. Pictured, left to right, are Dr. Trimble, Vincent A. Carlstrom, Chapter Chairman and Tatum, member of the Board of Directors. Carlstrom was also re-elected this evening as Chairman of the organization. Delta Delta Delta sorority sisters from the College of Puget Sound have almost completed the giant ring of flowers for the Pansy Ring Tea ceremonies. The tea honors all senior women. Engaged and recently married seniors will be further honored by stepping through the seven foot ring of pansies. Bank of California; Rhododendron display in lobby. The Tacoma chapter of the American Rhododendron Society presented its 7th annual Rhododendron Show in the lobby of the Bank of California May 21-22, 1955. The show was free of charge and open to the public. For the show, the lobby was transformed into a Spring garden with evergreens disguising the tellers' cages and forming a backdrop for the colorful display of hybrid and specie rhododendrons. Statues adorned this flower "island" in the center of the lobby and another corner was transformed into a patio garden with a pool with running water. Exhibits were featured by the University of Washington Arboretum, Portland and Seattle chapters of the national organization, Northwest growers and local members. Members of the Loyal Order of Moose as Seattle Sea Fair Pirates. As part of Tacoma's Fun Fair, on the evening of July 22, 1955 the pirates would raid downtown Tacoma and battle the Indians for control of the city. The city had been returned to the tribes at the opening of the Fun Fair. Posed with the pirates is the platinum blonde "official Indian princess of the Tacoma Fun Fair," Princess Ah-Pu-Yaki, otherwise known as Reina Dougherty. Reina was the granddaughter of George J. Dougherty, the first territorial judge of Washington and the interpreter for Ezra Meeker, founder of Puyallup. The love of the judge's life was Anne Dougherty, a mute Indian girl who was well educated and loved music. He traded a portion of land, now at the heart of South Tacoma, for an organ for her to play.
