The Hires Root Beer booth at the 1959 Home Show, photograph ordered by the 7 Up Bottling Co. Two men propose a toast to Hires, an "adventure in refreshment." Free samples are being handed out at the booth decorated with the Hires logo and replicas of the Hires bottles. The eleventh annual Home Show was again taking place at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. Over 100 exhibitors were displaying over a half million in goods. Record crowds were expected.

1969 Tacoma Home Show. The annual Tacoma Home Show brought fresh new ideas for home improvement to the foreground for local residents. It included not only enhancements for the interior of the home but for the exterior as well. An exhibit booth featuring Landscaping by Carini displayed a variety of native trees and shrubs to create a pleasant atmosphere for the homeowner. Landscaping by Carini was owned and operated by Joseph M. Carini, Jr., 1611 So. Mullen. The display was one of the first exhibits near the entrance of the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Professional model Judith Marush is accompanied by Pat O'Toole and Joe Hoots on March 18, 1965, as they examine the Hoots Construction Co. display booth at the 18th annual Tacoma Home Show (now renamed the House & Garden Show). Photographs depicting renovation of the Charles Nelson mansion at Olalla are framed within a walnut credence built in a traditional 1860 style. The Nelson residence was built in the steamboat era. A giant carved "hoot" owl head on top of the panels surveys the interior of the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. More photographs of the Nelson mansion are visible beyond the first display. Joe Hoots Construction had a fully equipped shop and was known for their custom cabinets. Four-year-old Suzy Jo, a student at the Hilltop Day Care Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children, has her eyes fixed on the bouncing ball while three adults kneel behind her in the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on January 15, 1969. Mel Jackson, associate director of the Hilltop Multi-Service Center, jubilantly holds aloft two fund raising tickets to the upcoming UPS-University of Alaska basketball game to be held on February 1, 1969, at the Fieldhouse. Next to Mr. Jackson are Al Roberts, UPS co-chairman of the upcoming charity event, and Mrs. Marguerite Cousins, director of the training center. Proceeds from the benefit match would go to the help students at the learning center. The following year would see the nationally-ranked cagers from UPS play California's University of Redlands, with ticket sales directed once more to the learning center. Seven women model the latest in outerwear from sensible raincoats to swing coats with wide sleeves and rolled-up cuffs in a style show that was a fund raiser for the Orthopedic Guild and the Tacoma Day Nursery. A stage and runway was built at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse for the event that drew nearly 4000 people.

Earl Conklin poses with a sample cup of recently blended Vitene Shake at his booth at the annual Greater Tacoma Home Show in March of 1959. Earl Conklin was the owner of Conklin's Nutrition Center at 403 So. 11th. The company sold high protein foods for weight control, allergy alleviation and dietary food supplements. Vitene was a protein powder with vitamins and minerals that could be mixed with milk or juice for a delicious, healthy shake. The special Home Show price was $3.50 for a 1/2 pound or $6.50 for a full pound, both came with a complimentary trademark "rocket" bottle.

Miss 1959 Home Show, Miss Cheryl Thorestad, was photographed while standing on the "porch" of the Landscapers Northwest booth in the College of Puget Sound (now UPS) fieldhouse on March 19,1959. For the first time in the Home Show's eleven year history, a fully landscaped display, complete with landscape architecture, was featured. Miss Thorestad was a 20 year old secretary at the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thorestad of 1415 No. Huson. Musical program at the Washington Music Educators conference. Nine hundred high school and college students selected for All-State bands, orchestras and choruses gathered in late February, 1962, for a Gala Festival Concert at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. View of well-dressed teenagers, probably the various choruses, at one end of the fieldhouse; members of band/orchestra seated in front of them. Modular home display. This is the assembled modular home, "MODS," with landscaping located at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse parking lot in time for the 1970 Tacoma Home Show. For the first time in 24 years, there would be two model homes located in the parking lot; both of them were modular homes manufactured by St. Regis Paper Co. The home was divided into three sections and trucked in to be assembled. St. Regis wanted the buying public to see that low-cost modular homes could be very attractive and affordable. The Second Annual Tacoma Home Show was held at the C.P.S. Fieldhouse from March 21-26, 1950. Over 100 exhibitors brought for display everything imaginable for building, modernizing, decorating, landscaping and equipping a home. Barnes Radio and Television, at 3823 No. 26th had on display the latest in home entertainment, including Motorola televisions. A smiling little girl, dressed in her Sunday best with a brimmed hat, wrist length white cotton gloves, and a miniature handbag, selects the winner of their door prize - a brand new, Zenith radio.

A woman member of western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry's troupe, likely acrobatic dancer Audrey Haus, displays one of her talents backstage at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on July 15, 1949. The limber dancer is photographed kneeling and gripping the three-inch heels of her ankle strapped shoes. She is wearing black fishnet stockings and a short sequined and fringed garment. Gene Autry had brought his troupe of western stars and radio entertainers to Tacoma for a one-night-only performance on July 15th. On July 15, 1949, western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry and his horse Champion took a bow during a show at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. The well-trained horse was kneeling on his forelegs with Mr. Autry, in western garb, in the saddle. The audience of 5,000 was treated to singing, skits and the special appearances of Champion and his son, Champion Jr., during the joint College of Puget Sound - Tacoma Athletic Commission one-night variety show. Gene Autry was America's favorite "Singing Cowboy" and he became famous in film, radio, television, and live theater and rodeo performances. The CPS Fieldhouse is packed to the ceiling as thousands gathered to hear President Dwight D. Eisenhower on October 18, 1956. The fieldhouse walls are decorated with portraits of Mr. Eisenhower and numerous signs stating "Welcome Ike." President Eisenhower is pictured addressing the crowd of 8,000. The college facility ordinarily held 6,000 but extra space was made for the largest crowd in the Fieldhouse's history. Eisenhower, on a re-election campaign trip, spent the night at the American Lake home of his brother, Edgar. He then travelled by motorcade through the streets of Tacoma to CPS, waved to by cheering school children who stood in the rain to catch a glimpse of their President. Following this speech, his motorcade sped him to McChord Air Force Base to travel by his private plane the Columbine III to Portland. The motorcade to McChord was marred by reported planned mischief against the President, causing the motorcade to move very fast and 20 minutes ahead of schedule. All the space in the massive Fieldhouse would be necessary to house the multitude of booths and exhibits from local businesses designed to attract potential customers. Feet and fists were flying during the eighth annual Golden Gloves boxing tournament held at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on January 20-21, 1956. Sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission, it attracted 59 amateur boxers representing clubs in six major Northwest cities plus the military. Golden Gloves tournament. The Tacoma Athletic Commission sponsored the eighth annual Golden Gloves tournament at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse January 20 & 21, 1956. They had expected between 75-80 entries; however, the final count was 59. Boxers from Tacoma, Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., Portland, Olympia and Everett in addition to the military represented their various athletic clubs or cities. Sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission, the event attracted 59 entrants; somewhat fewer than expected since the Fort Lewis boxers could not attend. Pictured here is believed to be Phil Moyer, representing the Portland Ramblers Club, whose left hook seems to startle his opponent. 1956 Golden Gloves. The Tacoma Athletic Commission-sponsored amateur boxing tournament was held at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on January 20-21, 1956. To pare down the field, preliminary fights were held on the 20th with semi-finals and the finals on the 21st. Nine champions were crowned in their respective weight categories with only the bantamweight division vacant. 1956 Golden Gloves tournament. Two boxers exchange simultaneous blows to the head during the eighth annual Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament finals at the C.P.S. Fieldhouse on January 21, 1956. The blond on the left is believed to be Lindy Lindmoser, representing the South Hill Club of Vancouver, B.C. His opponent is believed to be Willie Richardson of the Portland Ramblers Club. Richardson would be crowned the 178 pound champion. Guest referee Pat McMurtry, former Golden Gloves champion, watches the action. Mount Rainier Council's seventh annual Scout Jamboree, held in the College of Puget Sound's Fieldhouse May 4-5, 1956, included more than 100 colorful booths staffed by Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. One particular exhibit featured Scouts posing in uniform with a sombrero-clad donkey in front of a wall decorated with Boys Life magazines. Boys Life is a periodical published by the Boy Scouts. The Jamboree also had demonstrations of scouting skills presented by various Pierce County troops. Over 5,000 area scouts were in attendance. Ticket sale proceeds aided 138 Boy Scout and Explorer troops to purchase camping equipment, 88 Cub Scout troops to purchase equipment and training materials and the development of Camp Hahobas on Kitsap Peninsula, an overnight scout camp. Over 5,000 Pierce County Boy and Cub Scouts would be pouring into the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse to attend the annual Scout Exposition May 4-5, 1956. Over 100 colorful booths would offer exhibits of interest to scouts. Art's Glass & Upholstery were auto glass experts located at 816 Tacoma Avenue South. Their exhibit booth in the 1954 Tacoma Home Show indicated that they also provided hand tailored seat covers; customers ordering at the home show would be able to purchase these at the special price of $47.50. Large signs indicated that convenient bank terms would be available and that new blue-green tinted glass was now ready for all cars.
