(better known as ASARCO)'s smokestack was once the largest smokestack in the world at 571 feet when completed in 1917. Repairs shortened it to 562 feet twenty years later. ASARCO was a major employer in Tacoma for decades; it closed in 1985 due to economic and environmental reasons. The smelter stack was demolished on January 17, 1993.
