The Craters of the Moon National Monument was established in 1924, although a Presidential proclamation in 2000 greatly expanded the protected area.The site in the state of Idaho near the town of Arco encompasses three lava fields, and represent one of the best preserved flood basalt areas in the continental United States. circa 1960.
