Several homes under construction, Briggs Construction Co., Mr. Spillman. A residential street with a row of newly constructed one-story, single family homes is shown. The front yards have new lawns started but few other plants. Two girls are having fun skating on the smooth sidewalk. The Briggs Construction Company had completed 64 homes in the Fairmount Park Addition and 38 in the Parkland Addition. These homes provided every convenience and were conventionally built with concrete foundations, 2'x8" Douglas Fir flooring joists, oak flooring, pitched roofs with 210 pound thick butt asphalt shingles. Emerging from the Tacoma White Trucks dealership is a Griffin Fuel Company truck in a photograph taken on August 28, 1950. The White Company of Cleveland, Ohio began building heavy duty trucks and buses in 1900. The Tacoma White Trucks dealership was located at 2719 South Tacoma Way. Frank Buchanan was the president and manager from 1949 until 1954 according to the Tacoma city directory.

ca. 1950. This photograph of the offices of W. H. Opie Realtors was taken around 1950. The office was located at the intersection of 10th and Pacific Ave., 1001-05 Pacific. The clock in the window upstairs gives the "Knapp College Time" of 2:40. The modernistic structure was built in 1941 and was named the "Anderson Building" after builder Mrs. R.E. Anderson. It is constructed of concrete and crystal glass. Knapp College had occupied the 2nd floor since 1941.

Exterior view of Washington Hardware Company. Washington Hardware added a 50,000 square foot Wholesale Division at 1247 Puyallup Avenue in 1950. It carried hardware, building materials, tools, shop supplies and sporting goods for sale.

Shoppers at the self-serve meat department of Park-N-Shop pause to examine the wide variety of meats, fish, and fowl available in August, 1950. Instead of giving an order to a butcher and waiting in line for the order to be filled, the customer could save time by simply selecting from pre-packaged meats. Park-N-Shop was a grocery store located at 9662 Pacific Avenue in Parkland.

Two identical appearing young ladies stand by the Kingan meats display at the Park-N-Shop grocery store in August, 1950. Joy and Joyce both wear ribbons identifying themselves as Kingan queens. Kingan's, out of Seattle, was a meat packing company with an extensive line of hams, wieners, bacon and sausage. Park-N-Shop, located in Parkland, had a self-service meat department where fresh and smoked meats were pre-packaged for shoppers' convenience.

Mueller-Harkins Motor Company, general view from southwest. Wilsonian Apartments in background at far left of photo. Mueller-Harkins was a Buick dealership owned and operated by Rudolph, John, and Elsie Mueller. As their large sign advertised, new cars could be purchased for $2097 and above and delivered in the Tacoma area. Taxes and license were the buyer's responsibility. Mueller-Harkins also sold quality used cars as well as new models.

Two unidentified employees of Sam's Tire Service are hard at work in the tire recapping department in August, 1950. The man on the left appears to be examining a retreaded tire. Sam's was owned and operated by Samuel Pupo and located at 120 Puyallup Avenue. According to an ad that ran in the News Tribune on September 10, 1950, Mr. Pupo had 31 years of experience in the tire business in Tacoma. His company had added new molds for recapping the new low pressure tires. Sam's Tire Service also offered custom recapping for truckers. (TNT 9-10-50, p. C-14)

Art Swenning, owner of Art's Glass and Upholstery Shop, commissioned this studio photograph taken in September, 1950, of seat covers. It is uncertain whether the seat is to be used in a vehicle or in a home. Art's Glass and Upholstery Shop was located at 814-816 Tacoma Avenue South.

Crawford's Sea Grill, located at 505 Broadway, opened its new Star Room Terrace in August of 1950. Owned by Jack Meaker, Crawford's was built on the site of the Nelson Bennett Mansion in 1946. It was a very popular restaurant with Tacoma residents and visitors alike who enjoyed the unique Terrace which was completely enclosed in glass to take advantage of the view of Commencement Bay. The Town & Country Shop and the Wild West Veterans Club (Post #91) shared space at the same location. Crawford's closed in the early 1950s. (TNT, 8/30/1950) TPL-9848

Exterior of Dandy Cafe. Located at 917 Tacoma Avenue South, the Dandy Cafe shared a building with the Dandy Barber Shop in 1950. Owned and operated by Fred and Louise Fries, the Dandy Cafe was a small eating establishment. As the signs on the building advertised, they offered Coca-Cola and Flett's Ice Cream as part of the menu.

The Dandy Cafe was located at 917 Tacoma Avenue South; it was owned and operated by Fred and Louise Fries. Photographs for license purposes were commissioned by Mrs. Fries of both the exterior and interior of the cafe in September, 1950. The Dandy Cafe had a long counter with stools for quick and casual dining and a back area with upholstered seats and tables for more private occasions. A large jukebox was placed against the wall near a coat/hat rack.

In September of 1950, the clock on the wall of the Dandy Cafe indicated it was just past 7 AM. Customers at the counter were enjoying early morning breakfasts. A waitress was reaching for a pot of coffee while the cook was busy at his grill. The Dandy Cafe was located at 917 Tacoma Avenue South and owned and operated by Fred and Louise Fries. Although the cafe had a more private eating area in the rear, the five customers this morning seemed to prefer eating at the long counter.

ca. 1950. Interior view of Washington Hardware, Wholesale Division, taken in 1950. Double glass doors are framed with glass blocks. Main portion of the room has picture windows providing lots of natural illumination. Washington Hardware had such varied items as door knobs, ventilators, door canopies for sale. The newly constructed building contained 50,000 square feet and was designed by the architectural firm of Lance, McGuire & Muri.

Craig Furniture, Inc., was one of the many Tacoma furniture stores holding open houses in September, 1950, to celebrate the national Home Fashion Time week. Located at 1136 Broadway, Craig Furniture ran a nearly full page ad in the News Tribune on September 24, inviting the public to attend an evening open house. The event helped to attract many browsers who sampled the comforts of national brand furniture and took the time to inspect new freezers and rugs as well. Construction forms are being placed as work continues on the new Tacoma Transit building at 1235 South Sprague Avenue in September, 1950. One wooden form is being hauled up as a man on the roof supervises and other workers assist. Warter Construction is in charge. Tacoma Transit is replacing both administrative offices located at S. 13th and A Streets and a garage that was heavily damaged by fire. Buildings are being built on 8.6 acres owned by the company. Workmen are busy with construction forms as the new Tacoma Transit building goes up at 1235 South Sprague Avenue. Man on the ladder and three workers on the ground assist in the placement of wooden forms over the reinforced concrete. Window frames appear to be in place although no glass has been inserted. Tacoma Transit is building both an administrative building to replace offices at S. 13th and A Streets and an expansive garage. Total approximate cost is expected to run about $195,000. Several exposures of after remodeling of Manning's Market. This angled view of the serving area of Manning's Market's cafe section shows a large container of crushed ice where cold salads and other foods could be displayed and several units for holding hot dishes. Looking through the long horizontal windows, a customer could easily see and then order his selection for the day. The breakfast menu on the wall shows that cereal, fruit or juice, toast and coffee could be purchased for 50 cents and an egg, potatoes, toast and coffee meal would only cost 45 cents. TPL-9506

Several exposures of after remodeling of Manning's Market. Manning's Market, at the corner of 11th and Commerce, was part of Manning's Inc., a multi-million dollar food chain. Manning's in Tacoma contained a coffee store, cafe, bakery, meat market as well as a beauty salon and gardening supplies. This photograph, taken on July 31, 1950, highlights the coffee and bakery sections of the store. The gleaming showcases contain a selection of tea selling from 33 cents per quarter pound to 65 cents per half pound and a variety of coffees starting from 74 cents a pound. There is a lone two layer, heavily frosted, cake along side the coffee and tea. And, if a customer had a craving for peanuts, Manning's also supplied freshly roasted bags of peanuts for year round enjoyment. TPL-9507

Rhodes Brothers showing new sign above doorway. Coast Neon Displays, Carl Eckstein. Rhodes Brothers Department Store was built at the corner of 11th and Broadway in 1903. Over the years the front has been remodeled several times. Here is a view of the front as it appeared in June of 1950. Coast Neon Displays of Tacoma had just installed a new neon sign above the front entrance. Note that there is a parking meter next to the right front fender of the Cadillac convertible.

Several exposures of after remodeling at Manning's Market. Facing directly ahead, this photograph taken on July 31, 1950, shows a comprehensive view of Manning's Market. To the left are the coffee and bakery displays; the deli is in the center and Jackson Brothers Meat Market is on the right. Manning's could be construed as a one-stop shopping center where fresh meat, breads, and beverages could be obtained. The Jackson Brothers Meat Market were long-time occupants of Manning's; they specialized in quality meat and sold Swift Co., Carsten's and Rath's meat products over the years. The Jackson Brothers Meat Market remained in the Manning's location at 11th and Commerce until the building was razed in 1972. TPL-8118
